- Debenhams Ireland Redundancies: Motion [Private Members] (22 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: Seven minutes and three minutes.
- Debenhams Ireland Redundancies: Motion [Private Members] (22 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: I talk for longer than he does.
- Debenhams Ireland Redundancies: Motion [Private Members] (22 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: Deputy Lahart stated that no stone would be left unturned. We are not asking the Government to turn any stone. Rather, we are asking it to drop its amendment because that amendment is worse than outright opposition. It essentially repeats what Eamon de Valera - in this, the Minister of State is at least being consistent - said to Irish workers all those decades ago, namely, that labour...
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driver Test (21 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: 134. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will meet with representatives of driver instructors that are expected to be present at RSA centres to enable the use of their vehicles but that are afforded no facility to enter the buildings during the time of the test and in circumstances in which no waiting area is provided; and if he will request that the RSA take on board...
- Written Answers — Department of Defence: Defence Forces Personnel (21 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: 358. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence if he has received correspondence relating to allegations of bullying and sexual harassment in the Defence Forces; his plans for a full inquiry into the complaints; and if he or his officials will meet with survivors of such abuse. [17323/20]
- Written Answers — Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection: Social Welfare Schemes (21 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: 452. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection the situation in relation to a person who has been granted an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme in circumstances (details supplied); and the supports available for single parents in such circumstances. [16520/20]
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: Professor O'Doherty said earlier that BreastCheck is using the resources to the best of its abilities. I honestly believe that but the problem here is the lack of resources. She can correct me if I am wrong, but she said she reckons that 450 cancers could have been missed. Is that correct?
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: How many cancers does Professor O'Doherty think may have been missed?
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: I honestly believe that. The problem is the lack of capacity and resources. Professor O'Doherty said that out of every 1,000 checks, one would expect to find about seven cancers. Could she not put a figure on it on that basis?
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: If we are not able to pick people quickly enough, we could have more adverse effects than what would be normal.
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: I want to ask the HSE representatives a question. We are limited with time. The HSE has stated that it has added 3,271 posts. We do not have a breakdown of that figure, but how does that compare with the number of people who applied for positions as a result of Be on Call for Ireland?
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: I was asking for a comparison of that figure with the number of people who applied for positions. I think we all know people, at least one nurse and probably some doctors, who were left waiting around for months after responding to the Be on Call for Ireland campaign but did not get an interview or a post. It was stated earlier that the recruitment process is lengthy and cumbersome. I...
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: Will Mr. Woods comment on what the IMO stated this morning regarding the two-tier consultant contract inhibiting recruitment?
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: That is fine. I have a question for the witnesses from the National Treatment Purchase Fund. It was stated that one third of the work of the fund concerns securing public capacity. The problem we have, of course, is that if we continue to rely on the NTPF to solve the waiting lists, we are then effectively building up the private system and not dealing with the capacity issue in the public...
- Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Non-Covid Healthcare Disruption: Waiting Lists and Screening (Resumed) (17 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: Surely the NTPF would not exist if we did not have a dysfunctional public care system. There would be no need for a national treatment purchase fund if we had a fully effective national health service instead of the dysfunctional one we have.
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Covid-19 Pandemic Supports (16 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: 9. To ask the Minister for Finance the steps he will take to ensure persons are not charged interest on loan or mortgage deferrals by banks and other lending institutions, specifically such institutions in which the State has shares, etc., during the Covid-19 crisis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16300/20]
- Written Answers — Department of Finance: Covid-19 Pandemic Supports (16 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: 42. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will be introducing criteria for companies that avail of the temporary wage subsidy scheme and other State supports during the Covid-19 crisis such as clawback mechanisms in the event of them returning to profit, a bar on bonuses and dividends and so on for CEOs or shareholders and tax compliance criteria including restrictions on companies availing...
- National Oil Reserves Agency (Amendment) and Provision of Central Treasury Services Bill 2020: Second Stage (15 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: Like the Bill that was passed earlier, if we accept the rhetoric of this Bill, it is hard to argue against it on the face of it. Money from the current 2 cent per litre levy on petrol and diesel will now go to the climate action fund if we pass this Bill. We are told that fund will be used to help to reduce our emissions and reach our climate targets. What is not to like about that? ...
- Financial Provisions (Covid-19) Bill 2020: Committee and Remaining Stages (15 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: I support the amendment. The Sinn Féin amendment calls for oversight on this, and it is completely lacking anywhere else. It was said earlier that we could not pass an extension of maternity leave last night because it was too complex, but what we are looking at here is seriously complex and we are not getting the clarity on it that we deserve. To be honest, what is going on here is...
- Financial Provisions (Covid-19) Bill 2020: Committee and Remaining Stages (15 Jul 2020)
Bríd Smith: I do not want to be an irritant to the Minister of State and I do not expect him to apologise for it again but it is utterly shameful that the Minister for Finance, Deputy Donohoe, is not here today to take this session. It is an insult to the House. I understand it is because there is a Cabinet meeting. We asked during the suspension about the timing of this Bill because it is being...
