Housing Provision: Motion [Private Members] (23 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: I support the motion, which continues the debate we have held over recent months. On 6 May, the Technical Group used Private Members' business to debate the issue of housing and homelessness because we believed the Government was not serious in its approach or in recognising the crisis that people in our constituencies are facing. The coalition Government has belatedly come to accept the...

Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: The 2011 programme for Government promised an extension of BreastCheck to those aged between 65 and 69 years. As part of the Government's reform plans for the health service it was promised to roll it out at the beginning of 2014 but this has not happened. It was also part of Fine Gael's commitments before the election in 2011. The Irish Cancer Society has been asking the Government to...

Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: A promise was made by the Minister's party before the 2011 election, and it was part of the programme for Government, that the age group would be included in BreastCheck free screenings. Why has this not been done and why can the Minister not tell the Irish Cancer Society, the women in this age group and their families that he will seriously commit to the promise in the upcoming budget and...

Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: It was supposed to be 2014.

Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: What about the Government's views and the Department's views?

Leaders' Questions (18 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: While that is very good, I repeat that the Government is using the argument of tax cuts and putting it on the agenda as a ploy to get elected in the next general election.

Leaders' Questions (18 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: Will the Tánaiste give a clear declaration that she will prioritise reversing the cuts in social welfare and public services? We want to hear it from the Tánaiste. I want to hear the Government identify areas where cuts will be reversed and make a commitment not to introduce tax cuts as a ploy to try to get re-elected in 2016.

Leaders' Questions (18 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: There has been much in the media about the Government gearing up into election campaign mode, with promises of tax cuts, beginning in the budget to be announced next month.

Leaders' Questions (18 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: I am sure the Tánaiste, as leader of the Labour Party, would have nothing to do with such cynicism, using people's money to buy an election.

Leaders' Questions (18 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: These are the Fianna Fáil politics of old, which the Government promised to banish. We know how these promises worked out in practice. Will the Tánaiste commit to prioritising the reversal of cuts in social services and welfare payments before any consideration of tax cuts is made by the Government? That is essential following on from the MABS report. People should not have to...

Water Services (Exempt Charges) Bill 2014: Second Stage [Private Members] (17 Sep 2014)

Joan Collins: I am opposed to the introduction of this water tax. While the motion is straightforward and makes sense, it is a bit cynical of Fianna Fáil to move it as it would introduce the water tax if it was in power. At the same time, the proposal before the House is a straightforward recognition that people who have water that is contaminated or needs to be boiled should not pay for the...

Disability Services: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: I have heard a few people talk about "disability" in this debate and say they may find it embarrassing to say the word. I do not accept that. A disability is only a disability when barriers are put up and it is up to society to take away those obstacles. For example, if a dyslexic person cannot read in a class, there would be immediate intervention and recognition that this may be a...

Order of Business (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: The programme for Government contains a commitment to reform the way the Government is run. For the past two weeks, Deputies, ushers and other staff have been facing late night sittings, potentially to 11 p.m. and midnight. Those sittings were changed back to 9 p.m., however. When we come to the end of term before recesses in future, will the Government consider properly planning the...

Order of Business (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: If so, we would not have to sit until these late times. Sittings could even be extended by some days or an extra week to deal with such issues. It is scandalous that people cannot organise their days due to these work practices.

Tributes on the Retirement of Members of Staff (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: On behalf of the Technical Group, I thank Norah White and Padraic Donlon for their service over the years and extend my best wishes to them and their families on their retirement.

Leaders' Questions (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: A Cheann Comhairle, may I wait until they finish speaking to each other across the Chamber?

Leaders' Questions (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: I could have raised many issues today such as, for example, the United Nations Human Rights Committee's meeting on Ireland held yesterday, the massacre of hundreds of men, women and children in Palestine and, obviously, the withdrawal of funding for the neurological organisations. However, I am compelled to raise again some of the issues regarding the dispute in Dublin city between the waste...

Leaders' Questions (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: He also happens to have his company address in the same building as Greyhound. I ask the Taoiseach to call on the employer to end the lock-out, reinstate the workforce, withdraw the demand of a pay cut of 35% and to engage positively with the workers' unions in negotiations.

Leaders' Questions (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: I thank the Taoiseach for his reply but there is a certain urgency to this because those workers have been locked out for five weeks without a cent in their pockets. All Members of this House will rise on Thursday in the knowledge that their wages will be paid into their bank accounts on Friday week and again in August. These workers have no sense of security that they will go back into the...

Leaders' Questions (16 Jul 2014)

Joan Collins: The Taoiseach should be coming out loud and clear that these actions by Greyhound are deplorable. The workers are waiting, able and ready to go into talks again and to get their jobs back. That must be driven from the Greyhound management to allow them back into the workforce.
