Energy Costs and Windfall Taxes: Motion [Private Members] (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: I thank the Social Democrats and Deputy Whitmore for tabling the motion, which we are very happy to support. The main reason we have a cost-of-living crisis is profiteering and privatisation. That is what needs to be addressed. People Before Profit first tabled a motion in the House in October 2021 calling for the introduction of price caps on energy, gas, oil and electricity. We have...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: I thank all the contributors from the INOU, Social Justice Ireland and Age Action. Fair play to them for getting their heads around all this detail because I find it mind-bending trying to cross-reference the report's recommendations and the contributors’ responses and observations on them. I broadly agree with many of the points being made. I did not hear all the introductions. Is...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: This is on what the tax rate would have to be to fund it, is it?

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: Strong words. Did Dr. Healy say he thinks the basic income should be based on MESL? Did I understand that correctly?

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: Will Dr. Healy give a figure? I do not know if this corresponds to his idea of it, but in our pre-budget submission we argued that, as a minimum, people should go above about €290. I do not know if it was the MESL figure we used. We rounded it up to say people should have a minimum €300 per week.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: We are for going for it straight away.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: Somebody said to me that if you listened to the Government ads, you would think that by going to the community welfare officer you would get a holiday in Barbados; in fact, you cannot even get an appointment.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: I wish to be clear, as I did not hear everything. Are there disagreements over the universal basic income and, if so, what are they? Could we hear more from Age Action? The point its representatives made about renters was important. I am dealing with a case that sums up the situation. It involves a couple, at least one of whom was working before he got early onset Alzheimer's disease....

Cost-of-Living Supports: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: I accept that the Minister has taken measures, but it is self-evident that they are not working. We have 600,000 people living on or below the poverty line, hundreds of thousands utilising food banks, hundreds of thousands in arrears with their energy bills from last year, and the highest number of people in emergency accommodation that we have ever seen. The numbers mask the reality of the...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (14 Feb 2023)

Richard Boyd Barrett: For a very long time, some of us campaigned for the Government to introduce a policy of using public money to buy the homes of people threatened with eviction. Very slowly, and not very consistently, the Government has started to do that. It is not doing enough. A cohort of people is not getting any benefit from this, namely, those who happen to be over the social housing income...
