Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Early Years Sector (20 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Whitmore: The Minister acknowledged the great effort of people in the childcare sector and thanked them for the groundwork they put in prior to the opening of the schools. They wanted to see significant investment in their services, as did families and parents. I acknowledge that the...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Early Years Sector (20 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Whitmore: I acknowledge the work that is being done but it is like putting sticking plasters over a broken system that does not work for children, parents or childcare workers. That is not a long-term system because it will not deliver for us, as a country...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (15 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Whitmore: On behalf of the Social Democrats I too thank John for his work and wish him the best for the future. In the budget this week, an additional three weeks' parental benefit was allocated, which is welcome. I am aware, however, that many parents were disappointed that it will only apply from April. As the Tánaiste will be aware, parents with children under the age of one are finding...

Jennifer Whitmore: I thank Mr. Carroll for his presentation. It is welcome to see progress on this important Bill, for which we have awaited for a long time. I see the committee's role as one of making the Bill as strong as possible. I view the Bill with completely sceptical eyes because I want to make it very robust to ensure it will not only withstand this term of Government but will also reach forward...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: General Scheme of the Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2020: Discussion (14 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Whitmore: I am a firm believer that there is no need to reinvent the wheel and when developing policy or legislation we should look to examples overseas to see where it is being done well. Countries such as Scotland, New Zealand and the UK have actually done a much better job in this. How much regard to international experience did Mr. Carroll take into the development and drafting of this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: General Scheme of the Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2020: Discussion (14 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Whitmore: We need this legislation to be as strong as possible. It needs to be not only future-technology and climate-proofed, it needs to be future Government-proofed. We need this legislation now.
