Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: It fascinates me that politicians and party leaders have not woken up to the fact that 72% of people over the age of 50 vote. This is the highest proportion of voters of any age group in society. We spoke earlier about companies selling products to younger people. If they get some common sense the Government and politicians will sell their policies to the people over 50, of whom 72% vote.

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: Who was talking about facials?

Seanad: Waste Management: Statements. (17 May 2006)

Mary White: One minute Senator Phelan is in favour of incineration, the next he is against it.

Seanad: Waste Management: Statements. (17 May 2006)

Mary White: I compliment the Minister of State on his first class contribution which I will file away and use as a source of information on the great progress made in waste management. I refer to two words in the Minister of State's contribution, that is, "consensus" and "planning", which are critical. I draw attention to the proposed incinerator on the Poolbeg Peninsula in Dublin. I have spoken to the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 May 2006)

Mary White: I call for an urgent debate on care options for older people following the report in today's edition of The Irish Times that a consultant recommends that families be charged the full cost of caring for their elderly relatives in acute hospital beds in circumstances where those families have blocked their discharge from hospital. The reality is that families often cannot afford to pay for the...

Seanad: Migration Report: Statements. (11 May 2006)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister and compliment him on the tremendous work he is doing in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The recent increase in carer's leave to two years is a tremendous support to people who are caring for those who suffer from long-term illness. They can now be off work for two years and are guaranteed that they will get their job back after that time. Neither do...

Seanad: Migration Report: Statements. (11 May 2006)

Mary White: I thank Senator Bradford for the courtesy. I went into the salon and there were four Irish girls behind the counter who told me the salon was closed. I said I wanted to make an appointment but they said they had nothing available until next week. This was Wednesday night. We all know that foreign people working in shops, or the service industry generally, cannot wait to pack the bags properly...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: I remember Senator Minihan speaking on the Garda reserve force some time ago.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: As the Equality Authority and the HSE have designated next week a week for discussion on new approaches to aging and ageism I call on the Leader to allow a debate on the issues. At the end of May I will produce a policy document in which I will put forward nine propositions and I am confident it will be as successful as my policy document last year on a new approach to child care.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: Last night the Taoiseach condemned the murder of Michael McIlveen, a 15 year old boy, in Ballymena on Saturday night as evil sectarianism and said it was a reminder of the shocking bigotry that exists in the North. We need an immediate discussion on the North as we approach the marching season. A relative of mine teaches in a school in Ballymena and told me that young people in Roman Catholic...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: Is the Leader sure it was IanPaisley senior?

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: The top gardaí are political appointments.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)

Mary White: I wish to refer to the points made by my colleagues on the horror stories highlighted on the "Prime Time" programme last night. I could not believe that an exclusive apartment block in Ballsbridge was named, which I passed this morning on my way to Leinster House. I could not but think about the contrast between the patriots who died for our country 90 years ago and who are being celebrated...

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)

Mary White: I am seeking a debate on the public statements made by Mr. Justice Kinlen last week. Are we following the American and British model of large new prisons rather than the Scandinavian model of rehabilitation and encouraging and helping people to get jobs when they leave prison so that they will not re-offend?

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)

Mary White: Yes.

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2006)

Mary White: I call on the Acting Leader to request the Minister concerned to debate the issue of age and ageism, which I have raised previously. The people who created this Celtic tiger during bleak economic times have a right to have their issues raised. One of the key issues concerning older people is that of carers. I compliment the Minister concerned on increasing the carer's leave entitlement from...

Seanad: National Pensions Reserve Fund: Motion. (3 May 2006)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State. I saw him on "Prime Time" the other night and he batted brilliantly. He looked the part as well. Having seen him in his IFA days, he is playing a different role now, and is dressed for this one, as a politician. I am just being straight. As Senator Glynn said, I do not want to parrot what other Members of the House have said for the last hour and a half....

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2006)

Mary White: I wish to formally say how glad I am the Duke of Edinburgh is in Ireland today to present 91 awards alongside President McAleese. In 1998, I was given the mandate to deliver the President's award into Northern Ireland, which I achieved over a period of three years on a voluntary basis. I did not get paid and was honoured to be the chairwoman of the body in question. On a human level, it would...

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2006)

Mary White: This is important from an historic perspective. The Duke of Edinburgh told me——
