Education Funding: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: I am glad to contribute to this motion and I welcome the fact Fianna Fáil and Deputy McConalogue have brought it forward. I want to focus in particular on the SUSI online system for grant applications. I raised this matter as a Topical Issue three weeks ago when I saw the problems emerging and when Members began to be contacted. As I said at that stage, while the leaving certificate...

Credit Union Bill 2012 (Resumed): Second Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the debate on this Bill. The credit union movement and its branches throughout the length and breadth of the country, especially in small towns and villages, have provided a vital financial service during the past half century. Its structure, based on volunteerism and being close to its members and the community, was and is unique and the main...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Road Network: Discussion with National Roads Authority (14 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: I thank Mr. Barry for his presentation. It was good to see him in Ballaghaderreen recently at the turning of the sod for access to Mayo. That is welcome. He mentioned public private partnerships. Is the Gort-Tuam motorway to Mayo on schedule for 2013? Are many lands frozen from the point of view of planning permission, as the Minister has said that planning has stopped on certain roads...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Road Network: Discussion with National Roads Authority (14 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: Some of the signage sends people astray because it leads to townlands. That is a major issue. As regards kerbing at junctions on that same road, I presume the same applies throughout the country, although I am not an engineer, it was obvious that would cause accidents as has duly happened, and it has been moved back. An engineer was not needed to point out the danger initially. When a...

John O'Mahony: Was our meeting with the Irish Sports Council not meant for after Christmas?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Business of Joint Committee (14 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: If they are not completed, it will be a meaningless meeting. We should check.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Business of Joint Committee (14 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: I sent a communication this morning concerning a meeting I had yesterday. I assume that it arrived too late for the clerk's consideration. Given everything that is occurring in terms of aviation and so on, a delegation from Ireland West Airport Knock would like to meet the committee at our earliest convenience. The clerk would not have had an opportunity to see the communication yet.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Business of Joint Committee (14 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: Does the Chairman mean in or around 12 December?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: I asked about how many appeals had been lost.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: I do not want to get into individual cases. Appeals are not logged when they arrive by post. There was documentation in the case I referred to and the student had postage receipts but there was no evidence it had arrived in Cork. That is the issue. Are there other examples of that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

John O'Mahony: I apologise for arriving late to the meeting and thank the Chairman for allowing me to contribute even though I am not a member of the committee. I raised this issue in the Dáil last month and I am glad to see that some of the issues have been addressed. I understand the appeals system has been outsourced to somebody in Cork. How many records have been lost? When I contacted SUSI in...
