Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Jan 2021)

Mark Daly: Before I call on the Leader to respond to the matters raised on the Order of Business, I wish her a very happy birthday. In normal circumstances we would nearly buy her a cake with just one candle and we would have a proper celebration but due to Covid restrictions we will have to wait until another day.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Jan 2021)

Mark Daly: I join other Senators in highlighting that tomorrow is the United Nations international day of commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. It is important that the House and all nations remember the victims of the most horrendous crime against humanity in the last century. Senator Clifford-Lee has proposed an amendment to the Order of Business: "That No. 6 be taken before No....

Seanad: Report of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation: Statements (Resumed) (26 Jan 2021)

Mark Daly: I have here copies of the entire report. I thank the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Deputy O'Gorman, for bringing them over to us today for the debate. This is a copy for Senator Boyhan. From what I have read of the 2,865 pages of the report, like many Members of this House I have been disturbed and dismayed by the contents. The prevailing sense within...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jan 2021)

Mark Daly: As Members will be aware, we have sent out information on today's business. The Whips worked together and sent in the list. That is the order in which speakers will be called. There are 21 slots. The reason there are 21 slots is that there are 21 seats available in the Chamber for Members to speak from. Out of an abundance of caution, we want to make sure, as best we can, that there is...

Seanad: Standing Orders: Motion (19 Jan 2021)

Mark Daly: The motion relates to an amendment to the Standing Orders of the Seanad in the context of the use of the word "Chairman". There are 89 references to "Chairman" in our rule book and, 102 years on from the first sitting of the First Dáil, I think it is inappropriate that the Seanad would still use the word "Chairman". As a result of the motion that has been unanimously agreed by the...

Mark Daly: I thank Senator Boyhan for sharing his story with us. It is important that people hear first-hand accounts of what happened to Members of this House who were in those institutions. The Senator continues to be an advocate for those who are without a voice and are unable to speak up on their own behalf and that of the children they gave up for adoption and were forced to give up for adoption.
