Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Martin Browne: If nothing else goes out from here today - and it has come up on several occasions - it should be the number of professionals and trained people who could make a massive difference to our communities and the country if they were not caught up in the system year upon year. It has been flagged over and over again, with regard to the whole system speeding up. These professionals want to work...

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Martin Browne: The perception of a social welfare state for people in direct provision needs to be done away with. There are people in direct provision who would gladly start working, paying tax and being a major addition to this country tomorrow morning. I take it that no other member wishes to contribute. We are running against the clock anyway. Do Dr. Muldoon and Ms Ward wish to make a final comment?

Martin Browne: We lost the video feed during the meeting, but thanks to the staff here, we got it back fairly quickly and we were able to watch and listen again. I wish to correct the record. I said that the minutes were April's, but they were actually from 25 May.

Common Agricultural Policy: Statements (16 Jun 2021)

Martin Browne: We are in a situation in which a debate is ongoing over how a diminished pot of supports is to be distributed among the country's farmers who are being asked to do much more in return for far less. It seems as though our farmers are being utilised instead of being supported. The nature of the Common Agricultural Policy has changed from one that was supposed to assist farmers to engage in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (15 Jun 2021)

Martin Browne: I welcome our guests. Rather than supporting the production of affordable food, the focus of the CAP negotiations seems to be on increasing environmental measures without the funding that would be needed to do so effectively. Commitments and targets have been signed up to without the backing of the agricultural sector here. In the race to catch up with our commitments, will the EU the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (15 Jun 2021)

Martin Browne: Ms Maher has covered most of what I was going to say. To come back on what Senator Boyhan said, it is no wonder Ireland ranks second lowest in Europe for organic farming when the research into organic crop production is being done by the groups themselves and there is no funding for it. No supports are being given in order that potential suppliers can grow. I wonder about the research end...
