Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Accommodation Provision (6 Mar 2018)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister, Deputy Bruton, for coming to the House to deal with this important issue. Doolin national school has 91 students. This is set to increase to 95 next September but I suspect it will be even more. The school has a great principal and team of teachers. I have always been impressed by the school's ethos and the staff's dedication to learning. The principal is out on her...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Accommodation Provision (6 Mar 2018)

Martin Conway: It is a welcome acknowledgement by the Minister that the school has reached the number of pupils required for the provision of additional accommodation. What is important, as the Minister will understand, is a timeline because the construction industry is doing exceptionally well and it will not be easy to find a company with a gap in its schedule to do this type of work. It needs to be...

Seanad: Data Protection Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (6 Mar 2018)

Martin Conway: I concur with Senator Higgins. The Minister is speaking to colleagues on the issue of political representation. Members of the public want to be updated on the work being done by political representatives. My understanding, which may be incorrect, is that a new set of guidelines will be introduced to deal with this issue. Similarly, if a member of the public contacts a Member of the...

Seanad: Flooding: Statements (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: I have the floor. There is already a minute gone at this stage. I take the Senator's point on board and the Minister of State should have the opportunity to respond. I sincerely hope he gets the opportunity to come in within a week or two, when the matter is fresh in our minds and that of the Minister of State. I am sure he would be happy to do that. I live beside the sea between...

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: I move:That Seanad Éireann:- recognises the significant advances made by the Government since coming into office in promoting equality among all citizens including people with disabilities; - acknowledges that much work still remains to be done on creating an equal society for people with disabilities; - acknowledges that this is the first Government in the history of the State to...

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House to address the motion. He is the appropriate Minister of State to do so because the motion is very much targeted at the Department of the Housing, Planning and Local Government and the local government sector, in particular. I thank Senator John Dolan for his contribution. He is the only one who saw fit to go through the motion and table...

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: -----and a very good service from Limerick, Killarney-----

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: -----and Galway, so there is no excuse for many more of our colleagues not to use public transport to travel to work. The motion is good and I welcome the Minister of State's response. I thank my colleague, Senator Reilly, for seconding the motion. Hopefully, there will be a new set of guidelines to deal with this situation so people with disabilities can benefit from a streetscape that...

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: It has been an extremely useful debate. I am glad we were all in a position to accept the amendments. They were tabled in a collaborative spirit, a point for which the Seanad has become renowned in many ways.We have many disagreements and different approaches in how we go about our business but, when it comes to certain fundamental rights, the end result is what we all want and we are all...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: If a child of the digital age of consent, let us say 13, puts a picture on the Internet and the parents do not want it to be there, can the child overrule his or her parents?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: Yes, but it shows the folly of Mr. Lupton's example. I came in here believing that the age should be 13 but, because of the example Mr. Lupton gave, I am beginning to wonder. If a 14 year old boy or girl decides to put a provocative picture of themselves on the Internet at 14, the parents do not have any rights to stop them because the child has rights.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: The vast majority of Irish parents will be horrified if that is what happens. I have made that point. I will make just one more because I am not a member of the committee. When the group's report was concluded, was it unanimous? Were the recommendations unanimous or was there any dissension on them?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Feb 2018)

Martin Conway: Is Mr. Lupton disappointed that a member of the committee which unanimously supported the report has now adopted a different approach to one of the recommendations made?
