Leo Varadkar: I might ask Ms Coogan to respond.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: Whether we like it or not, sometimes companies that sue the State turn out to be correct in law. If it turns out that there is a flaw in our legislation, we cannot just wave a stick ant somebody and tell them they not allowed to challenge us. Under the Constitution, people are entitled to have recourse to the courts.

Leo Varadkar: That is where we are.

Leo Varadkar: It is before the courts.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: There are separate schemes. Some are SEAI, LEOs or Enterprise Ireland. Some are for large companies and others are for small companies. The main thing we want to do is get information out there so that companies know what is available. Some are for energy audits and others are for capital investment. There might be a case for streamlining the schemes. That is one option. Rather than...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: I thank the Senator. I do not recall receiving the letter.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: It may have been diverted to the Minister of State, Deputy Damien English, for whom this is his delegated area. I meet union leaders all the time and none of them have raised this with me. It may have been replied to at official level. I will ask Ms Coogan to come in on this.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: It is only a draft directive at this stage. We have a long way to go yet. Again, it is under the COMPET council, which the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary, attends rather than me. I will ask Mr. Newham if he wants to add to that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: It is fair to say that Clonmel has a great reputation as a place to invest and grow. We see that with Abbott, Boston Scientific and MSD. It is one of the reasons IDA Ireland acquired new land around Clonmel so that we can get further investment into the town and south Tipperary. We plan, under the regional property programme, to develop that site and make it available, and secure another...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: We need to ensure we have investment and job creation in all regions of the country, including the west and north west. The Senator will know many of those analyses are based on GDP, which can be very distorting in Ireland. The presence of just one or two very large companies in Cork makes the south west one of the wealthiest regions in the State but is it really? The same thing can apply...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: The Deputy says "potato", I say "potahto"; he says "half-empty", I say "half-full". There has been phenomenal investment in roads and infrastructure in the south east, and not just in the motorway all the way to Waterford. There is the New Ross bypass, and the N11 bypassing Gorey and going all the way through to Wexford. The largest bridge in the country is part of the New Ross bypass....
- Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Enterprise Support Services (4 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: As Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment I am acutely aware of the impact the current high energy costs are having on businesses of all size, including in the hospitality and food production sectors. Last week, the Government announced the Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme as part of the Budget. The scheme is aimed at businesses whose average unit gas or electricity price...
- Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Departmental Transport (4 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: On 17th September this year, I travelled on a Ryanair flight from Dublin Airport to Kerry Airport. I met with the CEO of Kerry Airport, visited the Kerry Technology Park and attended a meeting in Monavalley Business Park, Tralee. One official from my Department accompanied me on this flight. No other domestic flights were taken for the purposes of Department business by Ministers or officials...
- Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Energy Prices (4 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: I regularly meet and discuss concerns with members of the business community, labour representatives and other enterprise stakeholders. Officials from my Department as well as the Ministers of State and I, have had ongoing engagement with the business community and its wider stakeholders in relation to the impact of rising energy costs on businesses. Fora where the cost of doing business and...
- Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Departmental Policies (4 Oct 2022)
Leo Varadkar: I am informed the issue of the regulation of fossil fuels advertising does not fall under the remit of the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment. More broadly, the Department is helping businesses move away from fossil fuels and towards more sustainable, cheaper alternatives though schemes such as the €55 million ‘Green Transition’ fund.

- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (29 Sep 2022)
Leo Varadkar: I think the Deputy is referring to a decision to reband some local authorities and to move some council areas into a different band, but there is a wider piece of work being done by the Minister, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, at the moment and he hopes to have that work concluded by the end of the year. That relates to increasing the housing limits and income thresholds across the board. We, as a...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (29 Sep 2022)
Leo Varadkar: To be clear, there are no plans for a deferral. It is the intention of the Government that this levy will apply from April of next year. It does require legislation and it will be in the Finance Bill. The legislative process is the opportunity for us in the House to properly debate it and make sure we get it right, which is very important. The devil is often in the detail when it comes to...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (29 Sep 2022)
Leo Varadkar: There is a disparity and an inequality when it comes to where GPs are concentrated. More of them are in urban areas than in rural areas and more of them are in better-off areas than in less well-off areas. That has been the case, unfortunately, for a very long time. We have increased the rural practice grant and we have also provided dedicated funding for GPs who operate in...
