Gerard Craughwell: I will endeavour to get through it as quickly as I can. I thank the Minister, Deputy Ross, for coming to the House this morning to take this Commencement matter. Many Ministers send a Minister of State in their stead, so I thank the Minister for his attendance. Many driving tests for heavy good vehicles, HGVs, and buses scheduled to take place in the past two weeks at the Westside test...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Driver Test Centres (26 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank the Minister for that positive response. There are a number of locations the OPW could have a look at, including the industrial estate in Galway, the Údarás na Gaeltachta site and the old Tuam sugar factory. They are three sites off the top of my head that it may be possible to use. I thank the Minister for his time and for agreeing to support this.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (25 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: Our witness is very welcome and I thank him for a comprehensive overview of where things are. I have always had some concern about expansion of the European project. One is acutely aware of the old economic diminishing marginal returns to expansion, and the larger we get, the more precarious things become. Clearly, there is great benefit in expanding the project and taking in other...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (25 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank the ambassadors for their presentations. I will deal with Albania first. The steps taken in curbing corruption and putting judicial processes in place are to be commended. Albania's abundance of natural resources is incredible and probably explains the unemployment rate. There is tremendous capacity to build a very strong economy, which would be more than welcome in the European...

- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: No, not by the Leader. I was damned by the keyboard warriors as anti-vaccine, and it has plagued me ever since.Well, the keyboard warriors can stick this one into their agenda now. I am deeply concerned at the absence of the BCG vaccination, which was used for TB. I understand there are virtually no stocks of BCG left in the country. With the immigration that has taken place over the...

- Seanad: Smoking Ban: Motion (25 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I would like to address Senator Reilly as "Dr. Reilly" because he is talking about health today. I commend him on the introduction of this motion. I am one of the people about whom he spoke. I started to smoke at the age of 12. I walked to school so that I would have 3p to buy two cigarettes at the shop beside the school. By the time I was...

- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I join my colleagues who expressed their sympathy with the people of Toronto. If the tragedy in Toronto has thought us nothing else it has thought us that a simple vehicle can now be used by those who wish to wreak mayhem within a community. I also listened to the presentation by the hooded men today. My sympathy is with them and I congratulate the Tánaiste on meeting them. I hope...

Gerard Craughwell: One would have to meet the cow.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: One does not get a chance to respond to the Leader's response at the end of the Order of Business. Yesterday, he put up a sterling defence of the pay rise given to the Department of Defence people. Indeed he was correct. It was a 24% increase, not 25%. This means that 84.12% of members of the Defence Forces are 7% worse off than every other worker in this State based on averages. We also...
