(13 Nov 2012)

Dessie Ellis: The recent figure is 3,800 units and we have identified approximately 1,200 of them for use. They should be used to take people off rental subsidy or the RAS. We should be trying to target the area.

Vote 25 - Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government
(13 Nov 2012)

Dessie Ellis: Is it true that NAMA is holding substantial funds of approximately €2 billion in cash? Apart from the assets it is holding, is it possible to put pressure on it to access funding? If the funding is just sitting there then it makes sense for us to chase it. What level of local government cuts will be introduced in the coming year? Reference was made to the amount previously. I am...

(13 Nov 2012)

Dessie Ellis: It is important that houses are returned to a fit state. We must invest more in the area. If local authority houses are renovated, then it will ensure more money is available to local authorities from rent.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Postal Strategy Statement: Discussion with ComReg (7 Nov 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I thank the representatives of ComReg for the presentation and coming before the committee. It is disappointing that the witnesses are using the excuse of matters being sub judice in not answering certain questions. A High Court decision has been made and nothing that would be said here or elsewhere will change that, even if the matter goes to the Supreme Court. We will not give...

Order of Business (6 Nov 2012)

Dessie Ellis: The Taoiseach will be aware that Focus Ireland issued a report today on the rental supplement scheme. Rental supplement was cut in the most recent budget and may be cut further in the next one. HSE welfare officers have handled the administration of this matter.

Order of Business (6 Nov 2012)

Dessie Ellis: The Minister has said that this will be passed over to local authorities, but when will this happen? When will the legislation be published? We need real reform and debate on the issue of rental subsidies. We are in danger of creating a new homeless cohort because landlords refuse to take on people. They also refuse to continue the rental supplement because of these cuts.

Dessie Ellis: I thank the IAA for its presentation. One of the main issues with these proposed rules will allow for pilots to be on stand-by call for 22 hours a day. A pilot could be asked to fly even in difficult conditions. This can be extended by an hour in unforeseen events. We are aware that unforeseen events can happen often in the aviation industry.
