Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Progressing Disability Services: Discussion (Resumed) (22 May 2024)

Eileen Flynn: Dr. O'Leary and Ms Moran are very welcome to the committee this evening. It has been mind-blowing to listen to their remarks and read some of the documents. Yesterday, the Ombudsman for Children launched a report that talks about access for children into education. One of our biggest worries is children with additional needs accessing education. It is absolutely remarkable that we are...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Progressing Disability Services: Discussion (Resumed) (22 May 2024)

Eileen Flynn: Dr. O'Leary referred in her opening statement to meeting the person and each individual child where he or she is. Some children are able for mainstream schools with SNAs.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Progressing Disability Services: Discussion (Resumed) (22 May 2024)

Eileen Flynn: Some children need that one-to-one support in special schools. It is, however, a shambles. I see it as segregation, whereby we put disability in with the disability committee whereas it is the responsibility, in my opinion, of the Department of Education to make sure that every child has equal access to education and has free education. It is absolutely remarkable.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Progressing Disability Services: Discussion (Resumed) (22 May 2024)

Eileen Flynn: I do not know, Chair, if the committee could agree to write to the education committee to see if it will look at the Ombudsman for Children's report on access to education for children.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Regulation of the English Language Sector: Discussion (14 May 2024)

Eileen Flynn: I thank all our witnesses for coming in. I know it is not easy to put themselves out there and talk about rights for students. This is especially the case for black or brown students in Ireland today, and for anyone who is different. It is unfortunate to see the level of racism and discrimination on social media and the resulting fear out there among students from foreign countries....

Eileen Flynn: I surely to God am. Thank you, Acting Chair. I thank Senator Clonan for all of his work on issues that impact people with disabilities in Irish society and his work on the autism committee. It is clear that in this House and on the disability matters committee, people genuinely care about the rights of people with disabilities and we are making some progress. Having the expertise of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Deprivation of Liberty: Discussion (8 May 2024)

Eileen Flynn: I apologise for being absent but I had to leave to vote and talk to Dr. McDonagh. It has been a hectic day. I was not being rude or anything of the sort. I am interested in trying to break down barriers. Our justice system works for the few but not for the many, and that includes members of the Traveller community and people from other marginalised communities. Yesterday, I visited...
