- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: Does the Minister think that in Mr. Barnier we will have a friend in court if the Border poll happens and somebody has to subsidise the North?
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I congratulate my own parish and local hurling club, Clonkill. Over the weekend, we were lucky enough to come out the better side when we met Senator Paul Daly’s parish and club in the Westmeath hurling final.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: Clonkill were the victors on the day and I congratulate all involved.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: The Senator has the news here fresh. It is a personalised news service for him. While I have been slightly upstaged by my party leader, Deputy Micheál Martin, earlier today, will the Leader explain the resignation of Paul Quinn from the development board of the new children’s hospital? Mr. Quinn led the procurement reform programme across the public sector. The troubling...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: That was a party political broadcast. The starting gun has been fired.
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: Go on. The Senator is on fire today. Give us a few more bars.
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I am finished.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Local Authority Members (16 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I welcome the Minister of State. My matter relates to maternity leave for councillors. I note from the Minister of State's reply to Senator Noone that he is engaged in a great deal of work on councillors' remuneration and conditions. It is recommended that a councillor who is due to take maternity or parental leave to care for a new baby take a sabbatical for up to six months, during which...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Local Authority Members (16 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I appreciate the Minister of State's answer. I am delighted that he and the Minister of State, Deputy Stanton, are going to fully examine the issue. However, I am curious. Thanks to the Minister of State, there is a large review ongoing: Sarah Moorhead's report. She went to extreme lengths in having councillors report on what they do and so on. I presume that in this trawl and...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I do not know how up to speed the Leader is on this matter, but I had a brief meeting with Deputy Cahill earlier to discuss coursing and the netting of hares. The two relevant Ministers, Deputies Madigan and Creed, have agreed to the limited netting of hares for use in coursing and will assess the situation further over the next three or four weeks. The only complication is that it will be...
- Seanad: Industrial Development (Amendment) Bill 2019: Second and Subsequent Stages (10 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I know that much work has gone into this and I have discussed it briefly with the Minister. I know it ties into the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Consequential Provisions) Act 2019, which we have discussed at length. It has been a while coming and that is the only downside. We have talked about the measures for quite a while. The Minister has presented it and I...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Mutual Recognition of Decisions on Supervision Measures) Bill 2019: Second Stage (2 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I have been well briefed on the Bill by my colleague opposite, Senator Conway. It is an important piece of legislation. As the Minister of State outlined, the purpose is to transpose Council Framework Decision 2009/829/JHA, which we have been slow in implementing. Fianna Fáil has discussed the Bill and we are happy to support it. I will not delay the House today on the matter.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Competition Law and Trade Associations: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I thank the witnesses for their presentation. I will leave most of the questions relating to agriculture to my colleague, Deputy Cahill, who is our spokesperson. My question relates to insurance. I am concerned about the insurance industry and its cartel-like actions. The CCPC has carried out a lot of good work on the industry and there have been a number of high-profile "stings", for...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Competition Law and Trade Associations: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: There was a report recently on some of the larger insurance companies, which are loss making. Public liability insurance was mentioned. Insurance companies do not want to touch it and will get rid of at least 20% performing policies, particularly with regard to public liability insurance. Two or three companies seemed to be quoting for it over the past while but now nobody is quoting....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Competition Law and Trade Associations: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: The insurance companies employ people and get their licences through the Central Bank.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Competition Law and Trade Associations: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: Some of these guys are not fit to operate in the insurance sector and the CCPC has identified some complications with some of them. Would the CCPC suggest to the Central Bank that these guys are not fit to have a licence in the Irish insurance industry?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Competition Law and Trade Associations: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)
Aidan Davitt: The CCPC has done great work in the area in the past while. Ireland is a small country with an open economy. The State should warn these insurance companies that if they mess around, the problems they cause will be documented. We must tell them the Central Bank will strongly consider refusing them a licence.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)
Aidan Davitt: I will start on quite a sad note in extending my sincerest sympathies, and those of Fianna Fáil, to the family of Brendan Grace. We heard the breaking news about the very popular comedian and singer late last night or early this morning. We extend our sincerest sympathy to his family. We also extend our sympathy to the family of Noel Whelan. Many here will have known him from his...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)
Aidan Davitt: It is a slightly different spelling. I have no problem whatsoever with Commissioner Hogan.
