Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I believe our country will be missing out on this fantastic opportunity. This is also an ideal time for a debate on the Special Olympics to show our appreciation to these athletes and volunteers. I ask my colleagues to support me in calling on RTE to provide live coverage of the national games.

Mary Moran: There are two great volunteers here, are there not?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Youth Guarantee: Department of Social Protection (28 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I ask Mr. McKeon to deal with the question, because we have a vote in the Seanad.

Mary Moran: What about unemployed people who have a disability?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Youth Guarantee: Department of Social Protection (28 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I thank Mr. McKeon for his comprehensive briefing on the youth guarantee. We are all in agreement that it will be a great scheme to get people back to work. I visited the Ballymun project recently. Mick Creedon is phenomenal, given the wealth of knowledge and experience he has brought to it. He was generous with his time and spent several hours going over all the work being done. What is...

Mary Moran: Therefore, the money is available.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Youth Guarantee: Department of Social Protection (28 May 2014)

Mary Moran: There are no recommendations for people with disabilities, particularly those with an intellectual disability, and these are badly missing. There is nothing in the scheme to help them. I cannot find anything that deals with mental health problems, mobility issues or disabilities. The people concerned want to work and enter the jobs market, but they cannot access any opportunity.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 May 2014)

Mary Moran: After the local and European elections we have all suffered major losses.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 May 2014)

Mary Moran: Some people have made gains. I congratulate those who were elected and commiserate with those who were not. Some very fine people have lost local and European seats. I pay tribute to one person, a cousin of mine who died suddenly on Friday, Councillor Owen Bannigan of Lough Egish in County Monaghan. He served the people very well. He was an outstanding member of his community, party and...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Carer's Allowance Eligibility (27 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I agree with the Minister of State, but perhaps this is an area at which we need to look, where people might just fall outside the net for carer's benefit. Additional recognition should be given in applications for carer's allowance to single parents of children with a disability. In this particular case, there is no incentive to go out to work. I am afraid people who are just outside the...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Carer's Allowance Eligibility (27 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister of State for dealing with this Adjournment matter and hope he will relay the points I make to the Minister for Social Protection.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Carer's Allowance Eligibility (27 May 2014)

Mary Moran: She is, indeed. I have received representations from single parents of children with disabilities who have been unsuccessful in their applications for carer's allowance. Caring for a child who is classified as having a severe or profound disability is a 24/7 job but caring for a child with a high level of care needs becomes significantly more difficult if one is a single parent. Single...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Carer's Allowance Eligibility (27 May 2014)

Mary Moran: There are exceptions.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Forensic Evidence and DNA Database System) Bill 2013: Second Stage (27 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Fitzgerald, and formally congratulate her on her appointment as Minister for Justice and Equality. I look forward to working with her in her new role. This Bill is very important and will greatly aid the Garda in its already sophisticated and important work. A Bill such as this has been a long time in coming and I believe there have been three previous...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I welcome the announcement on Tuesday by the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Deputy Brendan Howlin, of funding of €5 million for a new centralised Special Olympics Ireland facility at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown. The new centralised headquarters will bring together the Dublin, Leinster and eastern region of Special Olympics Ireland offices. I have been...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Education and Training Provision (14 May 2014)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Cannon, for coming to the House. Our interactions are almost a daily occurrence at this stage. I recently received representations from the staff at Drogheda Community Training Centre, following a letter they received on Friday regarding the withdrawal of funds by SOLAS from May 2015. This news came as a shock to the staff in the training centre....

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Education and Training Provision (14 May 2014)

Mary Moran: If I understand the Minister of State correctly, this decision is based on the review of the learning outcomes and a cost benefit analysis. Will all of the students who are currently attending the centre move to other centres or finish their courses in Drogheda? Can the Minister of State guarantee that?
