Jimmy Harte: The Senator may interrupt all he likes.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I did not interrupt the Senator.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: Had the Senator not been on his phone, he might have listened to what I had to say.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: We should respect each other. I hope those who have 100% mortgages and may be in serious negative equity will be given some glimmer of hope. However, I express caution as the article to which I referred refers to the diminished role of the Central Bank regarding the many mortgage and loan books sold by financial institutions to outside venture capital funds. I strongly recommend that the...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Medical Card Reviews (21 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I thank the Minister of State for the explanation. I ask him to revert to me regarding the medical cards with the date of 2035 and the number of such cards which have been issued. Were they issued as a result of a glitch in the system? I know of a person with a medical card dated 2035. The person concerned is eligible for a medical card. I ask if the Minister of State's Department could...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Medical Card Reviews (21 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Alex White. I have already spoken to him on the issue previously. It has been estimated that approximately 7,000 letters were received, mainly by pensioners in the Inishowen area of Donegal. The information I received on the ground is that the letters were received mainly by pensioners whose review date on the card in many cases specified 2015 but...
- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: Senator Cullinane, who has left the Chamber, called for a debate on a wealth tax, which I would welcome. I believe all parties are in favour of a wealth tax. The proposed property tax, which Sinn Féin does not support, is a wealth tax. I have read Sinn Féin's wealth tax proposals. I spoke recently to a young businessman from Donegal who has a couple of pubs in New York and told him of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I am calling for a debate on wealth tax. The wealth tax introduced in Germany in 1997 was ruled unconstitutional by the courts there. Sinn Féin are all over the place in their wealth tax proposals. I would welcome a debate on the matter.
- Seanad: Action Plan for Jobs: Statements (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I welcome the Minister to discuss the issue of job creation. I imagine he agrees that eight minutes is not enough and that the Seanad and the Dáil could speak about this issue for many days. There has been a good deal of positive news, albeit slowly. However, we are moving in the right direction. Sometimes the public believes jobs are not being created, as all we hear about is job...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: First, I join in the congratulations to Fermanagh on securing the G8 summit next year. It is an opportunity for the north west, and especially Donegal, to benefit from the massive exposure Donegal will receive. I ask the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport to put a plan together with the tourism bodies to bring the leaders and President Obama, who has Irish roots, across the Border,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I will quote from the newspaper, the Belfast Telegraph.
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: Do you want me to read it out? I will read it out. Mr. McGuinness stated-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: Yes. The question is around the corner, so to speak. Mr. McGuinness stated: We've had a very consistent position down through the years. Sinn Féin is not in favour of abortion ...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: But they are in favour of murder.
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: Can you clarify that?
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: The question was that the Minister-----
- Seanad: Measures to Address Bullying: Motion (14 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I thank the Minister for coming to the House to discuss the issue. I also thank the Fine Gael Members for tabling this motion. I join other Members in paying my respects publicly to the family of Erin Gallagher who died tragically. Part of the collateral damage in that case was that her young brother was present when the suicide occurred. I would hope there could be some help in that...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (14 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I agree with the views expressed by Senators Conway and Whelan on the huge pensions and salaries that apply in banking circles. I spoke yesterday about the epitaph in Messines in Belgium, which reads: "For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today". The generation that is yet to be born will say to us that for your today, you took our tomorrow. We are responsible to the next generation who will...
- Seanad: The Economy: Statements (13 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: There was a recent court case where a financial institution tried to call in the pension fund of an individual and was unsuccessful. If we tamper with pension funds and seek to have them released early or to take partial payments out of them, the courts might say that if they are to be used for purposes other than one's pension, we may end up letting the institutions grab them, as it were.
- Seanad: The Economy: Statements (13 Nov 2012)
Jimmy Harte: The Minister of State is welcome to the debate on this important subject. Last week was armistice week in Europe and one of the epitaphs on the Menin Gate in Ypres is "For your tomorrow, we gave our today." The epitaph for the latter part of the 20th and the early part of the 21st century could be "For our today, we took your tomorrow". We owe it to the next generation, which has yet to be...
