Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: I move amendment No. 1 to amendment No. 1: In line 4, after "Ireland" to insert ", wherever it occurs". It should have been Senator Leyden speaking at this point, but he has disappeared. I am glad to contribute to this evening's debate, as I did on a previous occasion. We had a general debate during our first week back after Easter, as requested. I take Senator Quinn's point. Even though the...

Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: Nobody has said well done to Deputy Joe Higgins, but I do. He took on the issue, carved it out and persisted. Whether or not we are grumpy about it, we should say well done to him.

Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: Nobody else had the energy or commitment to address the issue as he has done. He was in Dunnes Stores in Athlone handing out his recruitment leaflets and newspaper. He got up on the platform and delivered a fine rabble-rousing speech and then departed. He travels far and wide in pursuit of disadvantage. The motion and amendment are well couched, apart from the omission. I am glad to note the...

Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: I am worn out writing letters and beseeching the Minister.

Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: What a pity. As I said earlier, my amendment to the amendment refers to the second point which condemns exploitation of all workers in Ireland. If we passed the amendment as worded, May Day would go to our heads. I am amending it to refer to exploitation wherever it occurs. This is due to the advice of our learned friend, Senator Quinn.

Seanad: Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines: Statements. (28 Apr 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: As the Dáil and Seanad have discounted Tuesday, we will sit at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 4 May 2005.

Seanad: Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines: Statements. (28 Apr 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: I am pleased to speak on this matter. I congratulate the Minister, Deputy Roche, and welcome him to the House. Senator Bannon is absolutely correct. The old style isolated county council cottages around the countryside, many of which are lying derelict, could be renovated through a grant scheme. Title deeds are often the problem with such properties as title cannot be proven. I am aware of a...

Seanad: Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines: Statements. (28 Apr 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: ——and planners. As planners are professionals who hold a degree, they appear to be averse to interference in their domain. However, if we do not have that we will not get anywhere because it is planners who make decisions. I am delighted with the reference to courtesy in the guidelines. I am sure all planners are not the same. Some planners say to couples, "No, you cannot have it there"....

Seanad: Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines: Statements. (28 Apr 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: I hope there will be no need for that.

Seanad: Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines: Statements. (28 Apr 2005)

Mary O'Rourke: I hope this point will hit home and I intend to speak on it in two weeks at the next meeting of Oireachtas Members in County Westmeath, but I wonder how one teaches manners to a person who has none. I understand some planners have ideological bents, have gone through the education system at UCD or another university, and have learned that one cannot do A, B, C or D. However, they cannot...
