Leaders' Questions (23 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: It is not something that could not be done. It could be. At the very minimum, the Taoiseach should set up a national co-ordinating group. I ask him to do this in good faith.

Leaders' Questions (23 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: A national crisis within our farming industry is affecting almost every part of the country, particularly rural Ireland. This relates to the availability of fodder for our cattle and is particularly acute in the dairy sector and in high intensity farming. Deputies Ó Cuív and Moynihan raised this last week. Yesterday I met the Bothar Buí co-operative and spoke to farmers who...

Leaders' Questions (23 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: The problem began last year with terrible weather in the summer which has impacted on the quantity of silage that could be cut and on the fodder capacity to deal with an extended winter. Cows would normally have been out on the grass for a long time by now but they are indoors. I met the chairman of the farmers' committee of IRD Duhallow yesterday who told me that by his estimate 90% of...

Micheál Martin: 126. To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation if he will ask the Industrial Development Agency to assess the reason for the lack of new investments in County Donegal; the dynamic behind this; and if he will seek a report from the IDA on issues that need to be addressed in order to ensure that the county becomes more attractive for new investments. [18639/13]

Micheál Martin: That is a good point and one which I endorse.

Order of Business (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: I beg the Ceann Comhairle's indulgence for a moment. On behalf of the Fianna Fáil Party, I express sympathy to people in the town of West, near Waco in Texas, on the appalling tragedy that is unfolding as we speak as a result of an explosion at a fertiliser plant. The enormity and scale of the tragedy is truly shocking. I extend our sympathies to all those who may have been bereaved...

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: I have not said a word. The Tánaiste is too precious about himself.

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: The first thing the Minister did when he came into office was change the targets. The internationally recognised targets for waiting lists were three months and six months. He unilaterally said it is 12 months. He had to massage the figures and perpetrate a con trick. That is what he did. The SDU has refined his machinations to nine months and over. The figures for three months and over...

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: It is important to put aside the spin and acknowledge that a dramatic intervention is needed. The Government needs to stand back from this, assess the crisis and then work out a proper pathway towards resolving it to ensure that as a minimum in difficult times we can provide a basic health service to our public and that operations that are needed are carried out.

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: That is the usual argument.

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: The Minister will not be turning to Deputy Shortall. We all know where the Tánaiste stands in respect of the Minister for Health. He is four square behind him.

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: The Minister for Health, Deputy Reilly, is assuring everyone that the health service is getting better and waiting lists are getting shorter. He assures us that patients who are waiting the longest for treatment are in fact being treated. Unfortunately, the facts and figures confirm that since taking office, the number of adults waiting for surgery in the country's hospitals has actually...

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)

Micheál Martin: These are not my figures but come from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, which, on entering office, the Minister, Deputy Reilly, indicated he would accept as being the official figures in respect of trolley count, enclosures and so on.

Leaders' Questions (18 Apr 2013)
