Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pre-Budget Submisssions and Considerations: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I welcome the presentations, particularly that from The Wheel. One of the values of having an umbrella organisation like The Wheel is that everyone in the community and voluntary sector must be involved in that day-to-day nitty-gritty and grind but The Wheel is taking a big picture view. That is essential. One of the things the pandemic has done is made us take stock and take a step back,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pre-Budget Submisssions and Considerations: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I have a brief question for Community Gardens Ireland. Before that, I wish to give an honourable mention to Grow It Yourself, GIY, Ireland Limited, which is based in Waterford. Tramore has the second oldest GIY branch in the country. I wish to mention the Grow It Forward scheme it is running this year, recognising that so many people have turned to their gardens. GIY has always been...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pre-Budget Submisssions and Considerations: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank Mr. McCormack. I will mention one of my personal hobby horses, which is school gardens. I ran a school garden in my previous career for many years. I firmly believe, and if one gardens with one's children one knows this, that if they grow it they will eat it. I want to give them the opportunity to grow it. It opens their minds, and their palates as well. I call Senator Murphy.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pre-Budget Submisssions and Considerations: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: It is certainly the first three-legged stool I have heard of with two half-legs, but I enjoyed the analogy. I will ask Community Gardens Ireland to give a brief comment with an eye to the clock.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pre-Budget Submisssions and Considerations: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I echo Senator Murphy's comments. On a personal note, I found this morning's session extremely interesting and informative. It will be really helpful in our work. I thank the witnesses from The Wheel and Community Gardens Ireland for their comprehensive contribution to this meeting. Their input will be of enormous benefit to this committee as we prepare our pre-budget submission to the...

Europe Day: Statements (11 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I have always considered myself a European. From early on, it was part of my self-definition. I was an Irish citizen first and foremost and within that, there are local and tribal loyalties like the address lines on an envelope marking townland, parish, county but in the wider frame, I am a European, a member of the European Economic Community as it was and, now, of the European Union. I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Bullying and the Impact on Mental Health: Discussion (Resumed) (11 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank the witnesses for their presentations and I wish we had more time to delve into them. It feels very rushed for topics on which we could spend an awful lot more time. I want to quickly mention some of the recurring themes that I am seeing appear between this week and last week, which are around revisiting the anti-bullying procedures, which clearly needs to be done; the collection of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Bullying and the Impact on Mental Health: Discussion (Resumed) (11 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Thank you. I have two questions which I hope Mr. Arneill and Mr. Holmes can answer quickly. There is so much I could ask Mr. Arneill but I have one specific question. Is there a role for the social media platforms? I am looking at the fact that 65% of eight to 12-year-olds have a social media account and I am quite sure many of those social media accounts require children to be over 13. ...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pre-Budget Submissions: Discussion with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Family Carers Ireland (5 May 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: In the first instance, I thank the witnesses for their presentations and detailed submissions. There is a huge amount in them for us to digest and work on and, hopefully, much of that will make its way into our final pre-budget submission. It is only right to say that, surely, of all the people affected in the pandemic, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Family Carers Ireland are voices...
