Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I thank our witnesses for the information provided. I would have preferred to receive a copy of this before I read about it on RTÉ. We can discuss that on another date. On the calculation of the living wage, which is a stated aim of the Government - although it has put the timeframe for it outside the lifetime of its own Government, which is quite handy - 60% of the median hourly...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: Dr. Bambrick might mention the sub-minimum rates of pay.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I am relieved that Dr. Bambrick cannot find the evidence because I cannot find it either. It is fair to say we have both been looking. It would also be reasonable to say that the evidence does not exist. To be fair, if we have looked and others have looked and we cannot find it, the evidence or justification cannot be found.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I should mention that my colleague, Senator Gavan, also introduced legislation on this issue previously. It is something that is of concern to Sinn Féin as well. Dr. Bambrick mentioned the minimum wage increases ranging from between 8.5% and 10.2% between 2004 and 2007. I absolutely know this was not Dr. Bambrick's intention but it looks on paper as if the Low Pay Commission was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I could not find any of that either. I thank Dr. Bambrick. In the last couple of days, civil and public servants voted to accept pay rises that do not keep pace with inflation. That has been acknowledged by ICTU. It is 6.5% for the average and 7.8% for those on the lowest pay. I am not in any way trying to interfere with the democratic process within the trade union movement, nor did I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I thank our guests. I apologise that I will have to leave before the end of the session because I am due to speak in the Chamber.

Electricity Costs (Domestic Electricity Accounts) Emergency Measures and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022: Second Stage (11 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I am glad to see the Minister of State in the Chamber to take this debate. The Government was warned that the legislation it introduced previously was not going to be enough. It was warned by an Teachta O'Rourke and others in the Opposition and yet it persisted. It did not accept reasonable and decent amendments that were tabled at the time but chose to ignore them and press on. I hope...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (11 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I agree 100%.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (11 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: It is very welcome to hear the Taoiseach say that. Will he comment on the leave entitlement of ten days?

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (11 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: The Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Deputy O'Gorman, announced last month that the Government had approved the domestic violence leave report. Recommendation 4 of that report states that employers should retain the right to request proof of abuse from a victim seeking leave. This recommendation reflects the disappointing and regressive position contained...

Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Low Pay Commission (11 Oct 2022)

To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if the recommendation of the Low Pay Commission to prepare a report examining the issues around retaining, removing, or expanding youth rates of the National Minimum Wage has been progressed following the publication of the Commission’s Living Wage Report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [50019/22]

Personal Injuries Resolution Board Bill 2022: Second Stage (5 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I welcome the opportunity to speak on this important legislation. I offer my thanks to all those who have worked and continue to work on it. I echo the sentiment expressed by the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary, in respect of the former Minister of State, Deputy Troy. I know that a very significant amount of engagement went into the production of this Bill. On behalf of my party, I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Louise O'Reilly: I thank the Tánaiste and his team for being here. I have some questions, which I will get to in a moment, but I wish to refer first to an article by Ellen Coyne in the Irish Independenttoday that refers to an objection by the employers' group, IBEC, to the introduction of paid leave for victims and survivors of domestic abuse. The Tánaiste will be aware that I have legislation...
