- Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill 2016: Report Stage (24 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: I commend Deputy McLoughlin on bringing the Bill to the House. Sinn Féin had a similar Bill on fracking, as had many others here. It is one of the unique occasions when there is cross-party support to try to get it over the line. It is to be commended. The Bill is a victory for the people in the Gallery and those watching proceedings all over the country more so than for anyone...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Engagement with MEPs (24 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: I welcome everyone here today. It is great to see all the MEPs representing all the parts of the island. On the relationship between the national Parliament and the European Parliament and where all this is ending, in the past year or so Brexit has focused people's attention on the growth of a very right wing ideology in many parts of Europe. In many places that ideology is very racist and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Engagement with MEPs (24 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: I will be brief as I have already spoken. The issue of the Border has arisen in regard to Brexit. The Border is approximately 500 km long. The constituency I represent stretches along it for almost 100 km, from Belturbet to Pettigo. I am, therefore, acutely aware of the impact that closing roads, putting up checkpoints and so on would have. It is agreed that is not wanted. The British...
- Questions on Promised Legislation (24 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: In the programme for Government, there is a commitment regarding the protection of children and the most vulnerable people in our society. Part of this is a process which all Deputies come across, namely Garda vetting, which individuals who work with children through employment, sports organisations or whatever have to undergo. There are huge delays in Garda vetting. I spoke to the people...

This charter guarantees that farmers will receive their payments within a proper and orderly timeframe. Last week, the Minister of State in that Department announced that he is conducting a review of all land which was the subject of burning in recent...

- Questions on Promised Legislation (17 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: In many places in the programme for Government, there is a commitment to rural Ireland. There is also a commitment to excellence in animal health and disease prevention. In the context of that, there is an issue in Sligo with the regional veterinary office. I raised this issue in the House before. I was informed that there was going to be a review. My understanding is that this review...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Greyhound Industry Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: The witnesses are both very welcome. It is useful to have people come in and give us a broad range of views on the Bill. The greyhound industry has gone through much upheaval in recent years and we have been very aware of lobbies coming from all parts of the country to committee members and others in elected office on various issues, many of which have been raised today, especially in...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Greyhound Industry Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: The primary focus of the Bill and Greyhound Racing Integrity Ireland is restoration of integrity. Even if we are seen to be going overboard in terms of what we are trying to do I believe it is the appropriate thing to do. Whatever needs to be done needs to done soon. Following enactment and implementation of this legislation a line will be drawn in the sand and we will be able to move on...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Greyhound Industry Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: In respect of the sanctions for doping and the issues that have come up in that regard, is there a bit of contradiction in looking for a red flag to appear beside the names on the race card for owners whose dogs test positive for cocaine or steroids? Surely if they test positive they should not be on the race card at all. My understanding was that the witnesses wanted a complete ban.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Greyhound Industry Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2017)
Martin Kenny: Or for controlled substances but for banned substances I do not think they would be appropriate. The proposal for publishing all results, positive and negative, would provide transparency.
