- Seanad: Order of Business (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: There should be a serious debate on this issue because it will have a significant effect, and not just on people who receive social welfare payments or family income support. They will not be the only ones hammered by this and the Minister should come to the House to explain what he proposes to do. Otherwise we will see fabulous empty buildings across the State because the Minister has lost...
- Seanad: Order of Business (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: We should have those two very important issues debated in this House as soon as possible to show we have some sort of credibility, especially if the Government is to accept the pay rises it is throwing at its members like confetti at a wedding.
- Seanad: Order of Business (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: I accept that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: I would not worry too much about that because I have been misrepresented more than once on that side of the House.

Liam Twomey: Did the Leader turn on "Today Tonight" as well?
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Committee and Remaining Stages (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: The motivation behind section 16 has changed since we last discussed this Bill in the House. Was it based on other legislation lying around in the Department of Finance that just needed to be tidied up as part of other miscellaneous legislative measures, as we were led to believe? We were told by the Minister last week that there were eight sections in this Bill when it was first proposed...
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Committee and Remaining Stages (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: On a point of order, I did not, as Senator Hanafin suggested, call civil servants liars. I believe it might be the politicians in Government who are not telling the truth on this issue. I have doubts about it as I cannot prove the allegations but that is the way this Government works.
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Committee and Remaining Stages (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: I remember dealing with the illegal nursing home charges and the Travers report dealing with billions of euro of taxpayers' money which was lostââ
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Committee and Remaining Stages (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: My point of order was raised to correct the Senator and put on record that I referred to politicians and not civil servants. I believe civil servants are far more likely to tell the truth than the shower running this country.
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Committee and Remaining Stages (31 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: Senator Hanafin should get on his high horse about something which might actually matter.
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Second Stage (25 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: This is a business Bill which is of little interest to most people inside or outside this House. It concerns the transaction of business in the European Union and allows companies work across borders within the Union. What about the inverse? Is there any chance that Irish people could get mortgages or other loans in other jurisdictions? The Bill focuses on companies coming to operate...
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Second Stage (25 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: I would like to correct that.
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Second Stage (25 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: I did not say I had no interest in the Bill. I said that many people in this House had no interest in it. Senator MacSharry should correct the record of the House if that is the attitude he is taking towards other Senators.
- Seanad: Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007: Second Stage (25 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: The Senator should learn to listen.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: The Cathaoirleach stated he wanted the Order of Business used by Members to seek debates. Last week the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform came to the House but failed to give much of an explanation as to why murder rates have increased by 50% or why the Deputy Leader of the House thinks this is a pantomime. We want to use the House properly to get answers. Yesterday Senator...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: If we want to raise issues, they should be dealt with in a serious manner and should be responded to by Ministers in the same manner. We should not be disrespectful to each other in this regard.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: If Senators raise issues in the House, Ministers should come back with proper answers. They should not just ad lib and give glib answers. This issue should be taken up with every Minister. I served with Senator Boyle in the other House, where he was passionate about issues. It is amazing how quickly his role seems to have changed since he became part of the Government.
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: The Senator sounds like a civil servant.
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: With regard to what Bishop Burrows said on abortion, politicians are not spineless. We have had a commission on assisted human reproduction and the Joint Committee on Health and Children held four public sessions on the issue. Both I and Senator Feeney attended those meetings. The situation in Ireland is quite clear. Irish courts give full protection to the foetus as soon as it is...
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Oct 2007)
Liam Twomey: Surely it is giving more than that.
