- Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Consequential Provisions) Bill 2019: Second Stage (12 Mar 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: We need to continue working for a seamless border. Along with the support of all parties in the Oireachtas, it is a great tribute to our embassy staff and our Ministers that solidarity with us has held across Europe. We need to continue that solidarity to hold while-----
- Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Consequential Provisions) Bill 2019: Second Stage (12 Mar 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: -----working in every conceivable way to get a benign deal across the line. Of course, we would all dearly love to see this decision rescinded through a referendum, however remote a possibility that might seem at the moment. It is a bad day. There is no such thing as a good Brexit, but we need to try to make the best of a very difficult situation.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Mar 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I request a special debate on Northern Ireland. I second the proposition of Senator Marshall that we invite those women and others to the House. The remarks made yesterday by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Karen Bradley, were totally crass and out of order-----
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Mar 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I take that back.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Mar 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I do support it. I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach. The Secretary of State's remarks were crass and inappropriate and should not have been made. I hope that, at a minimum, she retracts them and apologises in the House of Commons. It is almost like trying to throw petrol onto a fire that is partly extinguished and trying to reignite it. It is totally out of order.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Mar 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I support Senator Marshall in the context of bringing the particular group of women to the House but I would also extend the invitation to other groups over a period. It would not be realistic to have them all at one time but I would like to think that, over a period, all of the groups we met could come before the House. I thank Senator Marshall for the kind remarks he made about my input...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: No.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I will begin by getting myself some brownie points by congratulating our Chief Whip, Senator McFadden, on a significant event in her life today. That should get me a couple of days off next week, please God.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: No, I will let her do that. I am very pleased that after a long campaign on my part, initially raising it in this House and the Leader bringing the matter to the Minister, today members of the National Transport Authority, NTA, appearing before the transport committee, are suggesting that we supplement taxis and hackneys in the country to work the country's less profitable shifts. I have...
- Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte (26 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: Caithfidh mé imeacht. Slán libh.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I ask the Leader to invite the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Deputy Ring, to the House for a comprehensive afternoon discussion on rural Ireland and all the issues that pertain thereto. I emphasise that the good news in all of that will be that we have a vibrant rural Ireland and that many great things are happening there, although we would want to fill any deficits that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: General Scheme of the Miscellaneous Provisions (Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union on 29 March 2019) Bill 2019: Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment (19 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: What are the implications for the North-South interconnector in a post no-deal Brexit scenario, particularly in light of the rejection of planning for the interconnector in the North? Would a new agreement between North and South be necessary following a crash-out, no deal Brexit? Would we be back to the drawing board? What would happen to the interconnector if there is an agreed...
- Seanad: Loneliness Task Force Report: Statements (13 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I welcome my colleague and friend, the Minister of State, Deputy Jim Daly. I commend the very real engagement he has with his brief and with this whole area. I am aware that he is very serious about dealing with the whole mental health area. I also commend and genuinely congratulate my colleague, Senator Swanick, on taking this initiative, setting up the task force and producing this...
- Seanad: Loneliness Task Force Report: Statements (13 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: People have electric gates now.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Feb 2019)
Joe O'Reilly: I ask the Leader to invite my fellow Ulster man, whom I am very happy to congratulate on his appointment, the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy McHugh, to the House to discuss the CAO applications process. As everyone knows, the CAO is the mechanism by which we assess and allocate college places, based on a points system related to performances across academic subjects. I want to...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2018)
Joe O'Reilly: At the outset, I wish all the staff of the House and all of my colleagues a very happy, peaceful and joyful Christmas. I endorse the words of Senator Leyden and Senator McDowell on the events in Roscommon and the pending rally there at the weekend. I have more than a minor connection with County Roscommon in the form of strong family ties. It is important we call publicly for peace and...
- Seanad: Conflict in Yemen: Motion (19 Dec 2018)
Joe O'Reilly: I support and welcome the motion. I congratulate her on bringing it forward. It is no harm to read into the record of the House as quickly as I can the scale of the crisis in figures from the UN and various agencies working with it. A total of 22.2 million people, which is 75% of the population, have a level of need. There are 2 million displaced persons, 89% of whom have been displaced...
- Seanad: Local Government Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Dec 2018)
Joe O'Reilly: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, Deputy Phelan.
- Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge: Tusla (18 Dec 2018)
Joe O'Reilly: Cuirim fáilte roimh na finnéithe go léir. Tá sean aithne agam ar an Uasal Smyth. Tá brón orm nach raibh mé anseo níos luaithe chun an cur i láthair a chloisteáil. Le bheith lán dáiríre, tá an-mheas agam ar an saghas oibre a dhéanann Tusla go laethúil. Tá mo mhac ag déanamh eolaíocht...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Amendment) (Climate Emergency Measures) Bill 2018: Discussion (18 Dec 2018)
Joe O'Reilly: I support Senator McDowell's amendments due to a number of practical operational considerations. A point which has not yet been made is that we could damage the perception of our country with regard to inward investment by multinational companies, which could be apprehensive about a country with a precarious energy future and disputation about it. It is worthy of mention that there are...
