Non-Use of Motor Vehicles Bill 2013: Second Stage (24 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: I was contacted by a person who has a medical condition and was advised by her consultant not to drive for the next six months. It is difficult for anyone to give notice three months in advance of getting sick. However, the Minister of State has provided clarification as I speak. It is important that such exceptions be taken into account. There may be an issue for road hauliers....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2013)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: I thank all the representatives for their presentations which were particularly well made. Mr. Brian Kavanagh's point on the digital age and the difficulty, if drinks sponsorship was banned in Ireland, of controlling visual images from events abroad which sponsor drinks was well made. In other words, would it be implementable? There are some issues to which I would like the representatives...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sectoral Plan (2012 Edition): Motion (18 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: I welcome all the progress that has been made but I support what Deputy Ellis said in respect of 15-year lifespan which applies in respect of wheelchair-accessible taxis. This is an issue for taxi drivers in rural areas in particular. I was contacted by one driver who has a wheelchair-accessible vehicle but who cannot - as he would be obliged to do under the regulations - afford to purchase...

Topical Issue Debate: Garda Vetting Applications (17 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: I thank the Minister for the reply. I wanted to give credit to the Minister, Deputy Shatter, because he had the processing time down to five weeks in November last. Regardless of whether it is the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act 2012 that is causing the problem, the issue is the duplication of vetting that is needed. I would ask the Minister of State to bring...

Topical Issue Debate: Garda Vetting Applications (17 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for selecting this matter. Garda vetting has been an issue for a number of years. We all recognise the need for it for those who work with children and vulnerable adults. I am bringing this up today, however, because of the length of time it takes to get clearance. In February, 25 new people joined the vetting unit and last November the wait was down to five...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion with Alcohol Action Ireland and College of Psychiatrists of Ireland (17 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: I would like the witnesses to focus on the issue of sponsorship in isolation. Can this be implemented, in view of the fact that sponsorship comes from other countries too?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion with Alcohol Action Ireland and College of Psychiatrists of Ireland (17 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: Perhaps it needs to be banned altogether because the millions of euro that go into sport could be put into advertising on radio, TV and in print or some other form of advertising. This cannot be treated in isolation. I am anti-drink but I am trying to tease out how this can be done by isolating a particular group rather than attacking the whole problem.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion with Alcohol Action Ireland and College of Psychiatrists of Ireland (17 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: They made a very strong point that the low-cost selling of drink in supermarkets was a bigger problem. They also specifically stated that they could not survive without the moneys they receive in sponsorship from the alcohol industry.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion with Alcohol Action Ireland and College of Psychiatrists of Ireland (17 Apr 2013)

John O'Mahony: I welcome the presentations and the group's visit here this morning. However, I am pretty shocked by some of the assertions made and would like clarification on some issues. The bigger picture was mentioned and it was suggested there is an issue with pricing and availability as well as with sports sponsorship. Where does sports sponsorship rate as a priority in that regard? Is Alcohol...
