Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: It is a job of work that the committee has to do. It is a fair ask in order that we can have a real conversation. The MIBI is obviously dealing with worst-case scenarios in the context of incredibly serious accidents and claims. Has it compared those sorts of claims and costs with regular car accidents? Is it generally dealing with something that is a lot worse or serious?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Does Mr. Fitzgerald have a breakdown of that versus the breakdown of what falls into the insured category?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The MIBI has that work done, so we could get a copy of it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are talking about serious injuries and, worse, tragedies. We are also talking about far bigger payouts. Mr. Fitzgerald has no notion of the MIBI's average versus the industry average.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: By a considerable amount. It is a matter of checking if those figures have changed in the last while. Mr. Fitzgerald might have figures in respect of cases where alcohol and-or drugs were involved. Beyond that, are we talking about uninsured cars that were owned by person involved or are they vehicles that used to be referred to as company cars?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are then into the question of the various brackets. It is obviously those people, as referred to by Senator Dooley, who just find themselves in a position where it is difficult from their point of view to get themselves right, for want of a better term, in regard to licensing and so on. Mr. Fitzgerald referred to the younger cohort. There are those who just say they cannot afford this,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I was going to ask about that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: How much is the MIBI getting?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I imagine that they sometimes do not and that the MIBI has to take them to court.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Does Mr. O'Brien have any idea how much it costs to get that €500,000?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I am not giving out about it. The law is set up as it is, and the costs are the costs. I assume due diligence is done in order the MIBI gets the best bang for its buck. However, the fact is we are paying out €70 million and getting €500,000 back. Mr. O'Brien states that even this is at a cost of about €250,000.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I will finish up shortly. I appreciate the over and back with the witnesses. We need to look at those figures in the context of what happens. We need to ensure that whether it is enforcement or the piece that needs to be done when it comes to ridiculous insurance prices, it all needs to be done because we need to facilitate people so they can afford to put a car on the road, have it taxed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: With good manners, we would need a lot less rules.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank the Minister of State. In fairness, we are in a better place than we were, although I could argue that we should have reached here earlier. We could all point to examples. There is a community centre in my constituency that was being charged €11,000. A claim could be made against three organisations – the community centre, a company and a community organisation -...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We just need to see more, better, faster, quicker. The onus is on the Government to ensure that the conditions are as good as they can be-----

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: -----for more insurers to enter the industry. Be they community organisations, businesses or community centres, a large number of people have been under significant pressure for a considerable amount of time. Because of GoFundMe, the generosity of people and the fact that part of this happened before we entered the cost-of-living crisis, some of them were able to get through the gap. ...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 63. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will provide an update on the work of the Office to Promote Competition in the Insurance Market; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10256/23]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I would appreciate it if the Minister could provide an update on the work of the Office to Promote Competition in the Insurance Market. I am talking specifically about the difficulties that exist as regards public liability insurance. There are a large number of community organisations - community centres - that either cannot get insurance or are offered ridiculous premiums. We know what...

High Energy Costs: Motion [Private Members] (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: International oil and gas prices have fallen and the Government has spoken about how it would at this stage have expected energy companies to pass that on. There is talk of engagement and ministerial discussions with energy companies, but we are going to have to see action given how under pressure families are. Households have been left to try to find the money to pay unaffordable bills....

Environmental Protection Agency (Emergency Electricity Generation) (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are back dealing with this issue. I think I said before that we have a number of energy crises. We have the situation created by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and we have particular issues containing and controlling the energy providers. We are finally having a proper conversation about windfall taxes and the actions that are absolutely necessary to ensure there is a bit of order and...
