Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I am conscious of my time. I will move to my second question. Looking at who is unemployed, and this was reflected in both submissions, Travellers, migrant workers and black workers in this country are the most disadvantaged when seeking employment. What are the representatives' views on socioeconomic status? Ms O'Brien mentioned this. We are fully supportive of it being in the equality...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

Marie Sherlock: It probably points to the need for trade unions within a workplace and to be able to access a trade union in a workplace. I am out of time.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I want to pick up on two issues. Ms O'Brien spoke about people who want to work but cannot, and it is important to quantify that. The CSO says the figure was 15.1% in quarter 2 of 2024 and that figure has been rising, if we look at the annual average since 2022. We might talk about the number of people who are signing on but there is a much larger part of the potential labour force, some...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

Marie Sherlock: That is what I am driving at. We know that artificial intelligence is used widely in the screening processes for recruitment and, in particular, we have seen there is significant racial discrimination in online recruitment processes. I am thinking in particular of someone who has mental health difficulties but there is a whole variety of issues. In fact, saying that you were at home with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I am interested to hear to what extent the organisations are picking up on this as an issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank Ms Rogers.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2024)

Marie Sherlock: In recent days, we have seen the appalling extension of the bloodthirst of the Israeli Government. Approximately 41,500 children, women and men are dead in Gaza and the death toll in Lebanon is rising as we speak. The apparent crusade to wipe out Hezbollah and Hamas is a genocide. We have used that word many times, yet the world is still looking on. The UN General Assembly is taking place...

Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I move amendment No. 154: In page 108, between lines 2 and 3, to insert the following: “(7) The written statement referred to in subsection (2) shall include provision for the zoning of land for affordable housing within the meaning of the Affordable Housing Act 2021.”.

Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I will speak initially to amendments Nos. 155 and 156. I strongly support those amendments because we should have specific provision for social and cultural amenities in our development plans and that should be hardwired into this legislation. I know that many local authorities make reference to this in their county and city development plans, but the reality is that so many of our local...

Seanad: Better Planning for Local Childcare Provision: Motion (17 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister for coming into the Chamber. I sincerely thank Senator Currie for tabling this really important motion. All opportunities to continue to shine a spotlight on what needs to be done in childcare are very welcome. We all acknowledge that a huge amount has been achieved in this space in recent years. Notwithstanding that, there is considerable frustration among parents....

Seanad: Better Planning for Local Childcare Provision: Motion (17 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: -----is quite high. I apologise to the Acting Chair but this is important. We have to see real investment. We saw the EU structural funds in the 1990s come in and I see it mentioned over the doors of some of the community early-years services in the inner city. They came in with serious money to build early-years services. We need the State doing the same.

Seanad: Better Planning for Local Childcare Provision: Motion (17 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank Senator Currie for this, but we want to see a bigger and more expansive plan of action with regard to a State-led system of affordable and better paid childcare for those working in the system.

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank Dr. Ó Concubhair and Mr. Glynn for attending the hearing today. Both made very powerful statements in terms of the call for decriminalisation. Obviously a huge part of the decriminalisation conversation inevitably leads us to the question of access to drugs, the market for drugs and this question about legalisation. I know Dr. Ó Concubhair touched on it earlier. In terms...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I am conscious that I want to ask Mr. Glynn a question and my time is scarce. I thank Dr. Ó Concubhair. That is really useful. I have a particular interest in police culture and I hear what Mr. Glynn has said about trust and confidence in policing in the UK being at an all-time low and that ultimately, if we have a decriminalised model, it frees up police time. I am interested to...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank the Chair and our two witnesses for attending. I will put my questions to Deputy Chief Constable Wilson first. In terms of the experience in British Columbia, she stated that prior to decriminalisation, police officers rarely sought charges for simple possession. Will she explain the culture within the police force that was part of that situation? I presume there was not a major...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank Ms Wilson very much. To Mr. Russoniello, I am really struck by what he describes as the campaign to reverse measure 110 and the lack of leadership. He might share his reflections on the level of investment or the infrastructure that exists in Oregon with regard to harm reduction and health services. Was that part of why measure 110 was ultimately reversed? I note that he lists...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: In some ways, it was the problematic consumption of drugs in public spaces that led to decriminalisation. What are the laws with regard to consumption of alcohol in public spaces in British Columbia? Was there a difference between alcohol and drugs or were they the same?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Circular Economy as it relates to the Waste Sector: Discussion. (9 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank the committee for hosting this hearing today because for many of us here, it is a huge issue in our communities, and a huge issue for the workers within waste collection companies themselves. I know that after housing and policing, I think waste is the third biggest issue raised on the doorsteps in our communities. Waste is a public service that is effectively being delivered by...
