- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Mother and Baby Homes (11 Jun 2024)
Lynn Ruane: The site at Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea, County Tipperary, was home to one of Ireland's most infamous mother and baby homes, operational from 1931 to 1969. During this time, 6,414 women were admitted and 6,079 children were born there. Within two years of it opening, it was acknowledged that there was a problem with infant mortality and the congregation sent a representative to investigate...
- Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport (Arms Embargo) Bill 2024: Second Stage (29 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: I second the motion. In our thousands and in our millions we are all Palestinian. I once read that humans are wired for interconnectedness and interdependence and not for conflict or killing each other. This is why the chant, in our thousands and in our millions we are all Palestinians, deeply resonates with me and what I believe is the essence of what it means to be human. Right now we...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons (Amendment) Bill 2021 (28 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: I thank the Cathaoirleach and Deputy O'Callaghan. Obviously, this is a very important topic. Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with the impact of knife crime from my own life experiences from both ends - both in terms of the loss of life and in terms of people quite close to me who regretted carrying knives at a young age and their use. I will refrain from going into that but it is...

- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Middle East Issues (21 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: Today, we ask the Minister of State to speak specifically on the consideration the Department has given to the request and when a decision can be anticipated. In response to a written question raised by Deputy Cronin regarding the flotilla, the Minister of State, Deputy Chambers, set out the general procedures on providing the flags for the vessels. This is information we already know. We...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Middle East Issues (21 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: That is extremely important because we are under the impression that an application has been made through Deputy Chambers’s office. We have been in communication with people on the flotilla, including regarding their legal advice, and they have the steering committee there as well. The people on board the flotilla are also under the impression that the requesting application has been...
- Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Review of Barnahus Model for Young People who have Experienced Child Sexual Abuse: Discussion (21 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: I thank all the witnesses for their presentations on such an important topic. A couple of years ago I did a lot of research on the model, especially in relation to vulnerable witnesses and the courts procedure. I produced a report on it and it might be useful if I send it on to others on the committee. I have a lot of questions so I will probably come back in on the second round as well....
- Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Review of Barnahus Model for Young People who have Experienced Child Sexual Abuse: Discussion (21 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: There were the specialist interviewers as well. I am also referring to the clinical psychologists who are drafted in at the court process. I do not know how many times it has happened so far in Ireland. If a child who is in front of the court as an underage witness in terms of the abuse against him or her, what is the protocol? I do not know if that question is for someone else later on.

- Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Review of Barnahus Model for Young People who have Experienced Child Sexual Abuse: Discussion (21 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: Some of my questions come from a lack of understanding of the process and I will ask them so it is clear for me. The Courts Service is not included in the steering group. I know Mr. Brophy mentioned some work is ongoing between An Garda Síochána and the Courts Service. I am thinking of all the work done until the point it reaches the courts system and access to the courts. I am...
- Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Review of Barnahus Model for Young People who have Experienced Child Sexual Abuse: Discussion (21 May 2024)
Lynn Ruane: I take the point on bringing the Courts Service in too soon and that we cannot do so, but would a tailored recommendation or report go to the Courts Service regarding the child being engaged within the Barnahus model to ensure something follows them?

Lynn Ruane: I was also referring to the assessment being made and if there were to be a credible case of sexual abuse, when those services are asked to make those assessments. Those assessments, then, are also not taken in court as evidence because they are opinions. If Tusla and An Garda Síochána in future will be able to do this, how will they then fit into the process?
