Seanad: Budget 2016: Statements (13 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: There is much to say but it is appalling when only two hours are offered for a budget review.

Seanad: Budget 2016: Statements (13 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Just two hours for that.

Seanad: Budget 2016: Statements (13 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Yes, it is unfair.

Seanad: Budget 2016: Statements (13 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Yes.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I am shocked by the testimony which Senator Mooney has put on the record of this House about the HPV vaccine. My daughter has received that vaccine in the last two years. God almighty, these testimonies are absolutely shocking. It is putting the quality of life of our children and young women at risk. This needs an urgent inquiry. We have got to do something about it.When we, as parents,...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I find that shocking. I know that the Deputy Leader is the mother of young children and call on her to take a personal interest in ensuring this issue is investigated and the Minister for Health comes to the House, regardless of whether the budget is to be introduced or a general election held, to discuss it. We cannot sit idly by. I thank Senator Paschal Mooney for bringing the matter to...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Agreed.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Bring it here.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: On a point of order, my question was about why the Taoiseach will not have a public inquiry.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I have huge sympathy for the families living in the fire trap building, and I support much of what I have heard Senator Hayden say here. Who could afford to pay €18,000 per unit to make the apartments liveable in? I want the Leader to address my next question in his reply. What action will the Government take so that innocent homeowners are not the victims of shoddy below-standard...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: It is on the issue of pensions only.

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Minister of State is most welcome. I did not realise has was only recently married. I wish to extend my congratulations to him. We have a problem to solve and it is urgent. Ireland must step up to the plate. It is stepping up to the plate, but Ireland needs to show more leadership on the global stage. One prong of the solution involves solving the war in Syria and that is no joke....

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: It has not.

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I am happy to clarify it. What action has been taken against Assad the tyrant and against the growth of ISIS? The UN has to get in there. Our goal should be to take Syrians. I agree with the suggestion about 4,000 families. I am keen for the Minister of State to clarify the word "family" as opposed to "individuals". I agree with that much, but our goal should be to recreate their...

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: A man in Galway who is homeless has contacted me on a number of occasions and he asked me to tell those families that he would take their offer of care. Irish families are stretching out to the Syrian refugees. I believe the Government should solve our own housing crisis first. I was glad to hear what Senator Bacik said.

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Senator Bacik referred to news from the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality yesterday. However, it must be put out on the public airwaves. It is bigger than this. We may talk about things in this House but that does not mean the word is getting out.

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Minister of State should tell us the news. He should tell us when it is happening. He should tell us that we are not going down the road of a segregated "pack 'em and rack 'em" approach. That is terrible language but that is what has happened refugees and asylum seekers in the past.

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: That is the language being used on the street. I agree that it is terrible.

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: By any objective standard, Governments have done a poor job, not just this Government, but the previous Government as well.

Seanad: European Council Decisions: Motions (1 Oct 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Seriously, seven to ten years in direct provision.
