Pat Deering: I refer to the single farm payments and cross-compliance. Why would a member of or a team from the SIU deal with a cross-compliance issue when there are inspectors to do so?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Investigations Division: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Dec 2014)

Pat Deering: I welcome the gentlemen. It is an issue I have been following closely for the past 18 months to two years. I am aware of a number of cases, and various concerns have been expressed by farmers in my part of the country. As previous speakers said, nobody would question the idea of having a unit in place that would protect human and animal health. That is essential, but the special...

Order of Business (3 Dec 2014)

Pat Deering: The Bill started a debate on cash for gold outlets. A commitment was given that heads for the precious metals and cash dealers Bill would be drafted at some stage during the year. What is the status of that Bill and when can we expect it to be published?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)

Pat Deering: I have some supplementary questions I would like to pose. To go back to the situation in Northern Ireland, I am still at a loss to understand how processors in Northern Ireland can produce milk in the South, bring it back up North and then sell it back into the South and make money. I would like an explanation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)

Pat Deering: While I agree with what Mr. Ó Céidigh has said, I wish to go back to the main point. At the moment we are at a figure of 29 to 30 cent per litre, which is what we were at in 1995 but costs have gone through the roof in the intervening 20 years or so.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)

Pat Deering: I must declare a conflict of interest in that I am one of the 1,769 year-round milk producers. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Teagasc organised a very interesting conference entitled "Managing price volatility and expansion in a post-quota era" last Wednesday in the Red Cow. The buzzword for me was "volatility", because that is the way it will be in the future. ...
