Colm Burke: There is a difference of €744 per bed per week between the cost of a nursing home bed in a public nursing home and the cost of such a bed in a private nursing home. This does not make sense. In County Laois, for instance, the average cost is €2,585 per public bed while the average cost of a private bed in a private nursing home is €1,039. That is a difference of 148%....

Colm Burke: In fairness to the Department, there is a bit of work still involved in going through what has been produced and what needs to be dealt with, looking at all the different angles. I think a three-month period might be a bit too short. I am not sure of the Minister's view on it, even if the time was extended to allow the Department to deal with the issue.

Colm Burke: I have no difficulty in principle but the period of three months is way too tight. In fairness to the Department there is a fair bit of work involved in that. If the three-month period was modified I would certainly take serious consideration of the amendment but that timeframe is far too tight.
