Ruth Coppinger: Why was it 20 originally?
- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Report Stage (Resumed) (16 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: I will move our amendments in due course. I want to focus on one amendment that I am asking the Minister to take very seriously. When the Minister spoke about this Bill at the Select Committee on Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, he christened his plan to make changes in this regard the "Tyrrelstown amendment". When he gave an interview on the Seán O'Rourke programme...
- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Report Stage (Resumed) (16 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: I thank the Minister. Some progress has been made as a result of the persistence of the tenants. On a night when an occupation is taking place in a building not far from here, I ask the Minister not to pass a law that will allow vulture funds to evict ten households. I send solidarity to those involved in the Irish Housing Network and the "Home Sweet Home" campaign. I think...

- Other Questions: Domestic Violence (16 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: An education campaign should be considered for schools. We know that 60% of abuse starts before the age of 25 years. We need proper sex education and education on healthy relationships. The religious teaching of some schools is a barrier in this regard. We need to challenge the macho culture and misogyny endemic throughout many of the parts of Irish society. We need to discuss the...
- Other Questions: Domestic Violence (16 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: I do not know any socialist countries.
- Other Questions: Domestic Violence (16 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: 12. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if she will report on the "What Would You Do?" awareness campaign relating to domestic violence and abuse. [40442/16]
- Other Questions: Domestic Violence (16 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: This question relates to the high-profile "What Would You Do?" domestic violence awareness campaign, which was launched recently and on which almost €1 million is being spent. While I welcome anything that raises awareness of domestic violence and violence against women, my issue with this campaign is that it puts the onus on intervention by other people and individuals and does not...
- Other Questions: Domestic Violence (16 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: I do not believe it is right that the advertising campaign is putting the emphasis on relatives and friends. There should be an emphasis on prevention. The campaign is not aimed, as it should be, at the men who commit most domestic violence. I do not normally listen to "Liveline", but when I did so recently I heard a woman making an excellent point about her continual efforts to intervene...

Ruth Coppinger: This Bill will not be finished tomorrow.
- Business of Dáil (15 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: Will questions to the Minister proceed?
- Business of Dáil (15 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: May I comment on that? There is no way that this Bill will be passed tomorrow because the Minister made a huge mistake of putting a whole load of planning measures in with rental measures. We will be here until 3 a.m. on Saturday if we want to give this Bill serious consideration. He should not have done that. There should have been two separate Bills.
- Business of Dáil (15 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: The Minister should take the rental aspect out of the Bill.
- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016: Report Stage (15 Dec 2016)
Ruth Coppinger: In fairness, it was Deputy Curran who first spotted it. What has been revealed here is that there is now an incentive for displacement, for tenants to be displaced by their landlords. I asked a question earlier and the Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Deputy Damien English, nodded his head. I asked if the rent increase limits carry...
