Legislative Programme. (6 Feb 2007)

Bertie Ahern: This matter was discussed this morning and the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Brian Lenihan, has given the outline of his full proposal and its wording. To give the parties more time for consultation we will not proceed yet. There is plenty of time if we wish to do this. There are important issues to be dealt with if we can come to an agreement. The...

Legislative Programme. (6 Feb 2007)

Bertie Ahern: Realistically a referendum would have to be held by some time in April. We will have the work finalised and it is a question of whether the work with the parties will also be finalised.

Legislative Programme. (6 Feb 2007)

Bertie Ahern: The Government will be in a position to bring forward a referendum Bill within a week and there is no reason a vote cannot be held in early or late March. It is a question of whether agreement can be reached among the parties. I would not propose holding a referendum on the same day as a general election. That would not be a good idea.

Legislative Programme. (6 Feb 2007)

Bertie Ahern: I have listened to the views of Deputy Kenny, Leader of the Opposition, on this issue. Last year the House was coming down over issues with which we had to deal, and it was suggested that we should not go into recess in the summer until they were dealt with. That is the view I heard from all sides. I was strongly criticised because I went to an international forum — I was the only member...

Legislative Programme. (6 Feb 2007)

Bertie Ahern: I have answered most of those questions, but I do not know what Deputy Rabbitte meant when he said that when I engaged in constitutional issues during the period of my leadership, it was not what it seemed. When a Government of which he was a part tried to pass its only major proposal, namely the divorce referendum, I brought my whole party behind it to make sure it was passed. The Deputy...

Legislative Programme. (6 Feb 2007)

Written Answers — Northern Ireland Issues: Northern Ireland Issues (31 Jan 2007)

Bertie Ahern: It is clear that the co-operation of the British authorities is essential in the case of any suggestion for a public inquiry on these matters. This is something which was clear from the efforts of Judge Barron in all of his inquiries. The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights, which looked at those Reports, has recognised that. The Government has been...

Bertie Ahern: The mandate of the Department of the Taoiseach is to support me in my constitutional and ceremonial role as Head of Government and to assist me in providing effective leadership, coordination and guidance across key policy areas. Given this, the Department has minimal involvement in project related work and I am satisfied there is an adequate level of expertise available in the Department to...

Northern Ireland Issues. (31 Jan 2007)

Bertie Ahern: I will endeavour to answer all those questions. The first question was on what basis did I accept the decision, or the view, of the British Government. I was also asked about what Willie McCrea said on "Morning Ireland". I will not comment on individual voices from the DUP. I am much more interested in where the party stands. We are proceeding on the basis that all the parties accept the...

Northern Ireland Issues. (31 Jan 2007)

Bertie Ahern: As I noted in my response, I have only a few moments to go through many detailed questions and I will not have time to go through them all. The Assembly election due on 7 March is an integral part of the process and timetable that we negotiated and to which everyone agreed at St. Andrews. It is being held for the explicit purpose of endorsing the St. Andrews Agreement and of electing the...
