Pearse Doherty: Is there anything missing from the legislation that the witnesses would like to see?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: Yes, I am concerned that it would be an additional burden on credit unions because if one has to change the company, as distinct from the key partner, one may have to travel and there are additional costs involved. Does Mr. Morris simply represent a firm of chartered accountants?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: Is Mr. Morris speaking on behalf on his firm?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: I have another question for Ms O'Rourke following on from what we were talking about. She has not given us her opinion of the legislation in her written documentation so perhaps the organisation does not have an opinion on this. The legislation deals with a three-tiered strategy based on asset size. As a result, there will be different requirements and governance in respect of the credit...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: I thank Mr. Morris for his presentation. I see the sense of the provisions to change auditors every five years and I understand the key partner requirement. Knowing how a company works, just moving a key partner means there is still a familiarity and it is not sufficiently robust. However, I appreciate we are discussing a different group of institutions. Mr. Morris mentioned there would...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: If the key partner must be changed, does this not happen anyway?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: The reference in the submission to such regulations as corporate governance codes, related party lending codes and fit and proper regimes for senior managers and risk takers includes the specific comment that regulation should be as is required for the banking sector. To be brutally honest, I found this surprising coming from the IBF. I do not know if any credit union was responsible for...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: The banks cost the consumers, who are the citizens of Ireland, €14,000 per person as a result of the bailouts. The credit unions have not cost that type of money. People did not need to be protected from the credit unions. As I noted yesterday, my party believes in strong regulations that are in the interest of citizens and credit unions and that recognise the unique sense of the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: May I direct a question to any of these groups?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: On social lending, the MABS presentation states that in personal lending and social lending certain persons are driven to alternative higher costs. It is an area in which I have particular interest. I have brought forward legislation on this. The Irish League of Credit Unions made a presentation here yesterday and one of the gaps it saw in the legislation was that credit unions could not...
- Written Answers — Department of Defence: Departmental Staff Remuneration (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: To ask the Minister for Defence the number of persons within the Defence Forces and the number within his Department that are paid salaries of more than €100,000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [39500/12]
- Written Answers — Department of Defence: Defence Forces Reorganisation (20 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: To ask the Minister for Defence his plans to address concerns regarding the lack of a headquarters for the Reserve Defence Forces in the Formation North and Formation South; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [39498/12]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion with Irish League of Credit Unions (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: I ask Ms Cullen to confirm that she is not seeking to have the memorandum to be spelled out in the legislation. It is just that there is a requirement to have a memorandum of understanding between all parties.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Bill 2012: Discussion with Irish League of Credit Unions (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: I welcome Mr. Brennan's presentation and the contributions from the other witnesses. Sinn Féin supports the strengthening of credit union regulation but we need to see strong regulation that suits both members and the credit unions themselves. An understanding of the distinctive character of credit unions and the unique role that its members have played needs to be at the core of our...
- Other Questions: Garda Transport (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the number of Garda vehicles allocated to each Garda station in the State; the number of requests for additional vehicles that have been made and the number of these requests fulfilled during each of the past four years. [39346/12]
- Order of Business (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: Tá sé ráite sna meáin inniu go bhfuair garraíodóir ó pháirc náisiúnta Ghleann Bheatha litir bhagartha arís ón Roinn siocair go raibh sé ag labhairt amach ar Bhille a chuaigh fríd an Teach seo, Bille na Gaeltachta. An aontaíonn an Taoiseach gur cóir litir bhagartha a chur chuig duine atá ag obair mar...
- Order of Business (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: The Taoiseach does not sound too confident.
- Order of Business (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: On a point of order, I am entitled as a Member of this House to get a response to a question.
- Order of Business (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: I have the question written down here.
- Order of Business (19 Sep 2012)
Pearse Doherty: No, with respect. I asked when the Bill included in the legislative programme will be published and I did not get an answer from the Taoiseach. It is a simple question and he has not answered it, just as he did not answer the other question about the letter sent to the gardener who spoke out about legislation that went through this House.
