- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Teacher Recruitment: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2018)
Lynn Ruane: I am sorry for missing the start of the session. I had to give a presentation elsewhere. I wish to make a couple of comments and observations and perhaps ask one question. I am not completely set against the idea of live streaming classes. I support many schools that lack resources and whose classes I would love to see live streamed as opposed to how they are currently provided. I have...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Teacher Recruitment: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2018)
Lynn Ruane: Through the Chair, may I pick up on a small point there? I understand how, given the shortage of teachers, we will end up with someone who is unqualified to teach a certain subject taught by an absentee, but I am wondering about teachers who are actually permanent employees, who are three, four, five, six or seven years into their employment in teaching a subject that they clearly should not...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2018)
Lynn Ruane: Two years ago, when the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Richard Bruton, was appointed, he created a funding stream for new projects that would widen participation in education. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of launching one such programme, Turn to Teaching, on which I congratulate the Department. This is an access programme for children from diverse backgrounds, including...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Schools Building Programme Delays: Discussion (17 Apr 2018)
Lynn Ruane: My question is for Ms Carr. My daughter was in a Gaelscoil that had been in temporary accommodation since 1990. They were promised suitable accommodation 28 years ago. I never paid much attention to the impact of that when I dropped her to the prefab and it was only when they moved into the school last year that I could see what the students were missing. I had not tuned in to the impact...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Schools Building Programme Delays: Discussion (17 Apr 2018)
Lynn Ruane: I will ask questions on behalf of Deputy Catherine Martin, who had a bereavement today and asked me to put them to the witnesses, but I have a question of my own at the outset. It concerns Mr. Loftus's presentation in which he said that the Department of Education and Skills is in regular contact with the schools. That seems to be in direct conflict with the common experience of almost all...
- Seanad: An Bille um an Séú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2018: Céim an Choiste agus na Céimeanna a bheidh Fágtha - Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Mar 2018)
Lynn Ruane: We can be respectful of each other while also picking up on untruths. Senator Mullen put forward the argument that removing the eighth amendment from the Constitution does not future-proof the legislation against there being no term limits for abortion, but all his statement implies is that he does not trust women at any point during their pregnancy. Women will put a limit on themselves....
Lynn Ruane: Therefore, Senator Mullen is supporting late-term abortions in the stance that he has taken. I do not know what the phrase "abortion culture" means. I do not believe there is a culture of abortion in this country. If anything, there is a culture of silence, oppression and a mistrust of women. We need to trust women more. Politicians now or in the future will not make the decisions for...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Health Services Provision (27 Mar 2018)
Lynn Ruane: I thank the Minister of State for his time today. I am raising the issue of health care for transgender people in Ireland and the widespread deficiencies that exist in terms of standards, access and trans-specific knowledge in the Irish health service. As the Minister of State will be aware, Ireland ratified the current version of the European Social Charter 18 years ago, and submits...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Health Services Provision (27 Mar 2018)
Lynn Ruane: I thank the Cathaoirleach. I will make a number of quick points. Will the Minister of State agree to look at the fact that there are separate lists for hormone replacement therapy, HRT, with cisgender people being placed on one list and transgender people being placed on another, instead of everyone being one the one list? This is causing delays. The HSE is trying to state it does not...
- Seanad: An Bille um an Séú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2018: An Dara Céim - Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018: Second Stage (27 Mar 2018)

- Seanad: An Bille um an Séú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2018: An Dara Céim - Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018: Second Stage (27 Mar 2018)
Lynn Ruane: I thank the Minister, Deputy Harris, for being in the Seanad today and all of the ongoing work he is involved in, firstly as an advocate for change and also in the Department of Health in preparing for a post-eighth amendment health care service if the referendum is successful. He is very welcome, as are all his efforts in this area. I welcome the Bill and that Ireland will soon have a...

Lynn Ruane: I second the amendment.
- Seanad: Data Protection Bill 2018: Report Stage (22 Mar 2018)
Lynn Ruane: I second the amendment. I thank the Minister for his time and for his engagement to date, especially on the issue of child protection as it relates to this amendment. It was raised in the Committee Stage debate on the legislation and it is great to see Government amendments in the area that I welcome overall. I am happy to see Government amendments Nos. 12 and 13, which allow for codes of...
- Seanad: Data Protection Bill 2018: Report Stage (22 Mar 2018)
Lynn Ruane: Does it get to the point where those codes of conduct are never drawn up because the role of the commissioner is only to encourage rather than require? That almost gives an option for the codes of conduct not to be drawn up, not to get to the point where they could be a legal requirement.

Lynn Ruane: I also congratulate the students in Trinity. I went into the Dining Hall on the second day of the occupation and I felt very proud to see the majority of my campaign team who helped get me into that presidential office occupying the room. They were accompanied by the students from Fossil-Free TCD, and also Students Against Fees, which are campaigns which emerged during my presidency, so I...
