Liam Twomey: I am pleased the Minister is coming before the House for this debate on education for persons with special educational needs because everyone here is aware of the importance of applied behaviour analysis, ABA, in the education of children with autism. Government representatives have appeared in local media outlets throughout the country claiming to fully support parents and I want to see...
- Seanad: Economic Outlook: Motion (20 Feb 2008)
Liam Twomey: No one in this Chamber or in the media is trying to talk this country into recession. The sector of our economy that is not sheltered is suffering owing to a loss of competitiveness that has been...

Liam Twomey: The Mahon tribunal was raised in this House yesterday. That tribunal is an institution that was established by the Oireachtas and when it comes under sustained attack from within and without, we should set aside time to discuss it in this House. Liam Twomey: Whatever about Senator Alex White congratulating the Government, when the Government congratulates itself, it smacks of a self-delusional, almost patronising and colonial attitude. It is not long since Ireland declared itself a republic and the Government should not engage in such behaviour but when parties are in Government too long, these habits creep in. Liam Twomey: It is appropriate, in light of what I am about to say, that we have just finished a debate on the 70th anniversary of the Constitution. Two sensitive cases which have made the news headlines over recent weeks have brought to our attention the abuse of citizens' constitutional rights by two Departments and two...

Liam Twomey: Only two paragraphs of the Minister's response related to the matter I raised. I am sorry to say we are no better off. Of the 64 applicants how many were refused? How many are in the same position as the one I raised? This is a case of the State being unhappy with the outcome and taking the person to court knowing he does not have the resources to challenge the State in the High Court....
