- Citizens' Assembly on Gender Equality: Statements (20 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: In her inaugural address in December 1990, Mary Robinson declared: "As a woman, I want women who have felt themselves outside history to be written back into history, in the words of Eavan Boland, 'finding a voice where they found a vision'". President Robinson was acknowledging that her landmark election owed a great deal to stalwarts of feminism like Eavan Boland and Máire Mhac an...
- Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (20 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Very good. I do not doubt the Minister of State. I note that Deputy Boyd Barrett has a copy of the same letter that I am about to reference. The Taoiseach would also have received a copy of the letter from the People's Vaccine Alliance Ireland concerning the TRIPS waiver. Would that we were able to say that Covid is in the rear-view mirror in this country but unfortunately, it has...
- Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (20 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I dtosach báire, mar gurb é seo an chéad deis atá agam, ba mhaith liom nóiméad a thógáil chun cuimhneamh ar bheirt dár mórfhilí a chailleamar le cúpla lá anuas – Brendan Kennelly agus Máire Mhac an tSaoi. Mar a tharlaíonn go minic, is iad focail na bhfilí féin is fearr chun ómós a...
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: An Ghaeilge mar Theanga Teaghlaigh: Plé (20 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Caithfidh mé dul isteach sa Dáil chun labhairt. Is deas an rud é Gaolainn na Rinne a chloisteáil anseo, fiú go bhfuil Sorcha ina cónaí i nGaillimh faoi láthair. Tá an-chuid le plé anseo. Aontaím go huile agus go hiomlán go bhfuil meas agus ómós tuillte ag na teaghlaigh atá ag tógáil a gclann le Gaeilge....

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I agree with the Deputy. I found the presentations and briefing notes very interesting because we are starting to move to the crux of the matter, which is how we try to balance tensions between having an external, fair exam and how we can match it up with a continuous assessment model. We all agree the leaving certificate rewards a specific, narrow set of skills. We want to move beyond...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I have two further questions relating to more granular concerns. Mr. Whyte made particular reference to literacy and numeracy. It has often struck me, particularly around languages, that if somebody is not necessarily a very capable language learner, he or she will probably struggle with three or four of the seven subjects being taken for the leaving certificate examination. Obviously,...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: With the Chairman's indulgence, I have one more question. It is one that probably will receive a one-word answer and I suspect that I know what the word will be. We have been talking a great deal about well-being in schools and directing students to different pathways than those on which we are currently focused, such as the pathway to third level. Do we need to invest more in guidance...

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I agree.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I think we all were damaged by the leaving certificate. Obviously, it is more pronounced in certain groups but everyone here can relate to having nightmares, as adults, about the examination, including those who were successful in it. We were all damaged by it and it certainly needs reform.
