- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2018)
Martin Conway: I wholeheartedly agree with what Senator Davitt said. This country is going to have to get into the real world when it comes to insurance and what is going on. Judges are going to have to get into the real world as well. That is not the reason I am speaking, however. There has been much talk recently about the drug epidemic and that thousands of people are using recreational drugs. Our...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2018)
Martin Conway: The issue of drugs should be seen as a health issue as opposed to a justice issue.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2018)
Martin Conway: Most of the people on recreational drugs face a challenge in terms of their health. It is not a justice issue. As our society matures and evolves, we are going to have to have that difficult discussion and come up with a realistic plan to deal with the issue of drugs. I do not know what the processes are with the Seanad Public Consultation Committee. It is a very illustrious committee.

- Seanad: Accessibility Issues for Voters with Disabilities: Statements (6 Nov 2018)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Phelan, to the House. From many discussions I have had with him over the years I know of his steadfast commitment to equality. He has demonstrated that in a practical and progressive way in the job he is doing and in the support he has given me over the years. I acknowledge the presence in the Gallery of Robbie Sinnott whose court case led the way in...
- Seanad: Perjury and Related Offences Bill 2018: Second Stage (24 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: I too commend Senator Ó Céidigh on what I believe to be an important Bill. One learns a good deal with these types of Bill. I had thought there was significant sanction in the case of perjury being committed. People committing perjury have destroyed other people's lives. Certainly, it calls into question the integrity of the justice system having listened to Senator McDowell and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Future Direction of An Garda Síochána: Garda Commissioner (24 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: The welcome extended to the Commissioner is absolutely endorsed by everybody in the country. So far, he appears to be doing quite a good job and he has done quite a lot to build confidence. He is in his job two months. In that time, has he uncovered anything that disturbed him? Has anything been brought to his attention that has raised a serious red flag? I mean issues that he would not...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Future Direction of An Garda Síochána: Garda Commissioner (24 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: I am not coming at this with any information I have and which I believe the Commissioner should have. It is not motivated in that way. However, I have been a member of the committee for longer than anyone else and sat here on numerous occasions with the last two Commissioners when information was not put in the public domain in a timely fashion once it had been discovered. I hope sincerely...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Future Direction of An Garda Síochána: Garda Commissioner (24 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: Questions I was going to ask about Garda overtime and ICT have been asked by Deputies Jack Chambers and Ó Laoghaire and others. There is no point going over that ground again. As such, I move to the last set of concerns I have about the disclosures tribunal. Its recommendations have been well documented. To be fair, the Commissioner came out quickly and made his position known on...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Future Direction of An Garda Síochána: Garda Commissioner (24 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: That is very positive. Is the Commissioner satisfied that there are proper mechanisms in place for whistleblowers within the system? If someone has concerns and becomes a whistleblower, are there enough supports within An Garda Síochána to ensure such he or she will feel confident about coming forward?

- Seanad: Disclosures Tribunal Report: Statements (23 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: I am sharing time with Senator Buttimer. We will each take four minutes. I welcome the Minister, Deputy Flanagan. He is a regular visitor and treats the House with the absolute respect it deserves. The people did vote to retain this House and he is one of the few Ministers who actually respects its mandate. We are here on very important business. I acknowledge the contribution of...
- Seanad: Disclosures Tribunal Report: Statements (23 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: Sitting where the Minister is now was Deputy Fitzgerald. As far as I am concerned, Senator Craughwell is the only person who has come in here, stood up and said "Sorry". There are plenty more who should do the same.
- Seanad: Disclosures Tribunal Report: Statements (23 Oct 2018)
Martin Conway: Their absence is palpable. They are not here. We have five or six Members out of 60 here tonight. It is a disgrace on them. There was one gentleman who stood up here that night and talked about bullet-proof glass, if I remember correctly, in the Department of Justice and Equality, suggesting that the place was effectively contaminated beyond belief. I have no doubt that there are...
