Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Department of Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(3 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: I have three brief questions. Regarding the ICT issue, is the Minister happy that the Department is cyber-safe, bearing in mind the recent cyberattack? Has anything been put aside to deal with that issue? Could the Minister say a bit more about the Fulbright Commission? Specifically, could he comment on the situation regarding J1 visas, relating to international education between Ireland...

Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Department of Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(3 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: Very briefly and I thank the Chairman, I support my colleague, Deputy Cowen, on his points about the Hazidi community. I have met some of these people in the past and what they have experienced is unspeakable in many ways. I support the Deputy in what he has just said there and I will listen with interest to the Minister's response.

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Department of Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(3 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: I thank the Chairman. I welcome the Minister of State. I begin by commending the work of people in his section, both at home and abroad. When I was at the Department of Justice, we spent a certain amount of time in the UN in New York, Geneva and other places. As the Chairman knows well, we spent our time there lobbying for a place on the UN Security Council, which we got in the end....

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Department of Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(3 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: I again thank the Minister of State for his attendance. One of the issues that arose during my time in the Department of Justice was the horrors that occurred in the Mediterranean, with so many people drowning while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe from north Africa. One of the suggestions made at the time was that some of the aid from Europe should go to assisting people to...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Department of Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(3 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: The Minister of State gave a comprehensive answer on vaccines but there is one thing on which I am unclear. I apologise if I missed it. I refer to the Sinopharm vaccine with which many Irish teachers working in the Middle East, for instance, have been fully vaccinated. What is the situation if they want to come home? Did the Minister of State indicate that they will not be able to come...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Common Fisheries Policy (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: Last week, as the Minister is aware, more than 60 vessels steamed up to Cork Harbour. Fishermen are very concerned about their livelihoods and the future of the industry. They handed a letter in to the Taoiseach with seven points of concern. I know a lot of these people. They are salt-of-the-sea people, as opposed to salt-of-the-earth people. They are decent, hard-working families who...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Common Fisheries Policy (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for the work he is doing in this area and encourage him to continue in the strongest possible way to assist the fishing industry. I wish to make two points in particular. Could the Minister comment on the revoking of Ireland's fish landing control plan by the European Commission, whereby the fish have to be weighed in many instances on the quay side, to be de-iced,...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Electricity Generation (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: 77. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the potential benefits for coastal communities of having offshore electricity infrastructure located in close proximity; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29374/21]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Electricity Generation (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: Referring to Deputy Leddin’s question, which is linked to mine, offshore electricity generation is an extraordinarily exciting development. I want to ask the Minister a question about marine protected areas, which have been mentioned to me. I know there was a report submitted in October 2020. Does the Minister have any concerns about the impact of offshore wind generation on marine...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Electricity Generation (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: Linked with that, I welcome the announcement today that the Cork commuter rail link will be electrified. It is to be hoped that if we get the turbines up, there will be plenty electricity to drive the trains, which would be fantastic. As to infrastructure, and the Minister mentioned east Cork, the harbour in Cobh, and so on, the road infrastructure is an issue in Cobh, as he is aware....

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Electricity Generation (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for his enthusiasm and ask that he put even more of his energy into these projects. I am concerned about possible brownouts and blackouts because of the huge demand for electricity in Ireland, and we have seen threats of that recently. The sooner we get the infrastructure up and running the better.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Post Office Network (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: I have been contacted by constituents who are very concerned about this issue. Is the Minister of State concerned that post offices might close from the end of July and never reopen? Has she recently met representatives of the Irish Postmasters Union to discuss the matter?

[29373/21]

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: An Garda Síochána (1 Jun 2021)

David Stanton: 502. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of gardaí by rank and district in each of the Cork county and city divisions that have retired in 2021; the number that are expected to retire; the number that have given notice of their intention to resign later in 2021, in tabular form; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29158/21]

Health and Criminal Justice (Covid-19) (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (27 May 2021)

David Stanton: At any time, being the Minister for Health is a tough job. We all know that. Being landed with a Covid-19 global pandemic on top of that is not easy, to say the least. Being asked to look after a vaccine roll-out of an unprecedented scale was challenging. Having had to take charge of a quarantine regime was rather unsettling and demanding, to say the least. Topping it all, the recent...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Education Policy (27 May 2021)

David Stanton: 195. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if her Departmental representatives on a council (details supplied) have reported to her on the progress made to date in recognising post-primary private teaching service outside of the EU for the purpose of incremental credit, similar to that of primary school service; when she expects to receive such a report given the provision for...

Written Answers — Department of Rural and Community Development: Departmental Schemes (25 May 2021)

David Stanton: 25. To ask the Minister for Rural and Community Development the expected closing date for applications to the town and village renewal scheme; the way in which local persons and community groups may put forward possible project proposals; when it is envisaged that funding allocations will be granted in 2021; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
