- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: You are wrong on that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: I wish to pay tribute to Senator Landy. Apart from anything else, he was an absolute gentleman any time he worked with any of us in here. He is a great trade unionist and a great socialist. He represents the very best values of people on the left and I wish him and his family well for the future, while acknowledging that he will be a huge loss to this Chamber. I request that an amendment...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: It is a matter of disappointment that not one Fine Gael Senator had the integrity to stand up over the weekend. Not one of them stood up to say what everyone else knew, which was that the Tánaiste had to go. Instead the Leader, as recently as this morning, was defending the indefensible. There are further questions to be answered, and that is why I want the Taoiseach to come in here....

Paul Gavan: Another slush fund for the boys.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Obstetric Medicine in the Netherlands: Professor Sjef Gevers and Professor Eva Pajkrt, University of Amsterdam (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: I thank both of the witnesses for their presentations. I found them absolutely full of facts and with a broad and detailed setting of the health framework relating to terminations in the Netherlands. Before I ask my questions I wish to correct one aspect. The previous speaker, Senator Mullen, has given the impression that we know the numbers of terminations from Ireland. In fact we do...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Obstetric Medicine in the Netherlands: Professor Sjef Gevers and Professor Eva Pajkrt, University of Amsterdam (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: So in effect the Netherlands' system is based on a principle of trusting women.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Obstetric Medicine in the Netherlands: Professor Sjef Gevers and Professor Eva Pajkrt, University of Amsterdam (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: Can the witnesses give the committee some information about the health outcomes for women who access abortion health care in the Netherlands?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Obstetric Medicine in the Netherlands: Professor Sjef Gevers and Professor Eva Pajkrt, University of Amsterdam (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: Yes. I shall explain the context of the question. There is an argument from a strange minority that abortion is somehow overwhelmingly bad for women's health and has long-lasting consequences, such as on mental health for example.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Obstetric Medicine in the Netherlands: Professor Sjef Gevers and Professor Eva Pajkrt, University of Amsterdam (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: I am curious to know, if the witnesses have the information, about the Irish women that visit abortion service providers. We are familiar with the situation of women who are forced to go to Britain, and while the numbers of women who travel from Ireland to the Netherlands is smaller, do the witnesses have any data on them?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Obstetric Medicine in the Netherlands: Professor Sjef Gevers and Professor Eva Pajkrt, University of Amsterdam (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: I understand that. My last question is on a subject about which many people, I am sure, have thought. We are struck by the low rate of abortion in the Netherlands. The witnesses have related to us the very extensive programme of education and contraception. Could Professor Pajkrt expand on this? Clearly, whatever is being done in the Netherlands is very successful and there are lessons...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Obstetric Medicine in the Netherlands: Professor Sjef Gevers and Professor Eva Pajkrt, University of Amsterdam (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: I thank Professor Pajkrt.
- Seanad: Student Universal Support Ireland: Statements (23 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: I commend the Joint Committee on Education and Skills on carrying out this report and I encourage the committee to further investigate the SUSI grant system because there is much to be done across the board for our students. There are recommendations in the report which we welcome and there are some about which we hold some reservations. We agree that there needs to be a review of the SUSI...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: International Context: Dr. Patricia Lohr, British Pregnancy Advisory Service (22 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: I thank Dr. Lohr for the presentation. I have only two quick questions. The first is obvious, or perhaps not. Does Dr. Lohr's service experience high numbers of women from countries other than Ireland coming over to avail of its services?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: International Context: Dr. Patricia Lohr, British Pregnancy Advisory Service (22 Nov 2017)
Paul Gavan: Can Dr. Lohr give us a flavour of how access to abortion and the BPAS are viewed in Britain from a moral or a principle's based point of view?
