- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: I wish to refer to a question that my colleague asked as it may have been lost. Did I hear correctly that the Irish Association of Social Workers and the Care Champions are invited to the monthly meetings?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: Do they attend?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: Given that such a large proportion of nursing homes are in the private sector, have all of the answers that have been given to date only concerned the public realm?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: The witnesses mentioned HIQA and the private homes sector. I suggest that the committee looks for a report on some of the outstanding issues that cannot be answered by the witnesses present. As this is obviously a fraught situation for everyone, I want to thank people for their work at the front line. I thank the nursing home staff and management who I imagine in the vast majority of cases...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: I am sorry to press Dr. Kennelly but I ask her to keep her reply to a minute.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: I thank Ms O'Neill and Dr. Kennelly. Have there been any new residents admitted to nursing homes over the period? Obviously there must be families with elderly relatives who require nursing home care and attention. How is that managed? Are there some who are resistant to that option now because of the experience of the high rate of outbreaks and so on?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: Will Ms Tuohy quantify, year on year if possible, how many new requests there would be for nursing home care at this stage in the year? She said there is a reduction. Can she quantify it?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: That is clearly another challenge for the system and a significant consequence of the outbreak. Am I correct in saying there are some 2,000 staff on Covid-related leave in 100 facilities?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19 in Nursing Homes (2 Feb 2021)
John Lahart: What have been the psychological and mental health impacts on residents and staff? I ask the witnesses to give us a picture of that. What recommendations, if any, do they have for this committee on additional resources they need or additional interventions the system requires?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
John Lahart: I have started my timer, which is set for ten minutes. Before I go into the preliminaries, rather than get a written answer I will reiterate the question Mr. Walsh did not completely answer on the role of pharmacists in the roll-out of vaccines to the over-70s.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
John Lahart: I welcome the witnesses and thank them for their public service and dedication in recent months and the work they are doing. Generally, the debate and discussion on the issue needs to calm down a little bit. This committee meeting could serve a useful purpose for a resetting of the clock. It is not useful or helpful to talk about overpromising. What was said was based on figures that were...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
John Lahart: I accept that. I had questions on pharmacists and dentists. Again, there was a big frenzy. I have had emails. All of the questions have been answered very calmly. There is an answer to all these questions. Media abhor a vacuum. One of my key messages today is that everyone should just calm down. The questions get answered. The questions the pharmacists have had have been answered...

John Lahart: Okay. That is probably the best-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
John Lahart: I thank Mr. Goodman. There has been talk about overpromising and people being overly critical. I want to emphasise the message that the system needs to be given an opportunity and time to respond. I am satisfied so far with the answers we have received this morning. On the roll-out by GPs and pharmacists, does it apply to the AstraZeneca vaccine only? What other vaccines that may come on...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
John Lahart: Can those be rolled out via GPs?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
John Lahart: Is there a timeline for when the task force will have answers to which vaccines may feasibly be rolled out by GPs?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
John Lahart: I am coming to the end of my time. The key issues that have concentrated the minds of people are the roles of GPs, pharmacists, dentists and others and questions about the establishment of mass vaccination centres. We have confirmation, insofar as it is possible, of the continuation of supply, as promised until the end of February, and we have also learned that the best approach is to take...
