- Seanad: An Bille um an Séú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2018: Céim an Choiste agus na Céimeanna a bheidh Fágtha - Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Mar 2018)
Rónán Mullen: I reassure Senator Bacik in case she needs any reassurance that she should not feel any embarrassment about making a contribution that she believes is necessary on Committee Stage. After all, this is a life and death issue. The Senator does the job she is paid to do when she says what she feels needs to be said. Whether I agree with it is a different matter but I note in passing that she...

Rónán Mullen: I am very sorry if anyone thought there was anything personalised or nasty in what I said.

Rónán Mullen: Senator Bacik is a very bright person but she is also very good at using points of order when they are not points of order.

Rónán Mullen: I agree. In fairness, Senator Bacik has always been open about her point of view and deserves credit where others may not deserve it. If I criticise what she says and point out that people cannot rely on her view because she is already on record, it can hardly be viewed as a personal criticism, unless it is proposed to shut down debate completely.

Rónán Mullen: I assure the Acting Chairman that I will not offer any points of order about what other Senators say. The Minister was at pains last evening to cast doubt on people's concerns that politicians cannot be trusted with an issue such as this. Already today in the corridors of this House, I was scolded by a member of the Government for daring to say that politicians cannot be trusted on this...

Rónán Mullen: That was an attempt to corral people who believe there is something fundamentally wrong with asking a question that would remove human rights and an attempt to portray such people as anti-democratic. There are all sorts of other questions we do not ever want to put to the people because to do so would subtract from human rights. If the Minister was to consider any other vulnerable category,...

Rónán Mullen: -----or at least the laugh that it deserved, but I noticed he did not get it. I listened carefully to what the Minister said last night and regarding his reassurances seeking to undermine the notion that 12 weeks is very permissive. A one day, two day or three day waiting period does not offer any meaningful protection for an unborn child, boy or girl, if one believes that it is a human...

Rónán Mullen: In the fine old debating tradition, will the Senator give way since he mentioned me?

Rónán Mullen: The Senator is entitled to give way as well.

Rónán Mullen: I am the rapporteur on palliative care for the Council of Europe, but the Senator has probably not done his research on that.

Rónán Mullen: I will send an Easter egg to the Leader.

Rónán Mullen: Three for a tenner.

Rónán Mullen: I wish Senator Mulherin well in her quest to bring Pope Francis west of the Shannon. No doubt there would be people of all ages gathered around the gable wall, if that comes to pass. Last week, we had a debate about reducing the voting age to 16, and whatever one thinks of that proposal, there is no doubt that we need to engage the trust of young people in the political system, but for that...

- Seanad: An Bille um an Séú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2018: An Dara Céim - Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018: Second Stage (27 Mar 2018)
Rónán Mullen: I regard this as a sad day. It is sad that the referendum Bill is being presented to the House. It proposes the holding of a referendum to deny the most basic human right of all, the right to life, to unborn boys and girls. It is sad to hear it being communicated in such a matter of fact way, as though we were just regulating health care to make matters somewhat better in normal...
- Seanad: An Bille um an Séú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2018: An Dara Céim - Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018: Second Stage (27 Mar 2018)
Rónán Mullen: Why do I say that?I heard the Minister say he recognises the deeply held views on all sides of this debate and respects them, but he told us, with passion, later that he was tired of being an ostrich. I do not believe it is being an ostrich to look out from Ireland and take account of our situation, imperfect as it is. Ireland is, nonetheless, a country where many women, who in abortion...

Rónán Mullen: Doctors have been able to do what they do. That is why it has been so wrong to reach for the Savita Halappanavar case when that tragedy showed in the various reports that there was a failure to manage sepsis properly just as can and does happen on occasion in abortion jurisdictions. There has been a real lack of respect shown to the truths of our history around how the eighth amendment has...

Rónán Mullen: As it is the spring equinox, I would like to wish everybody a happy lengthening of the days. It is also international Down's syndrome day. It is a day to reflect on the joy that those good people bring into so many people's lives, the inspiration they are for so many. It is also a day to reflect on our need to include them and people with disabilities generally more and more in our...

Rónán Mullen: The Cambridge Analytica business is, quite frankly, beyond me in its technical complexity. It seems to concern bots which seems to be where robots imitate human beings. Perhaps when it comes to social media we need to avoid the phenomenon of human beings acting like robots, in other words robotically getting into a language, and I am not just talking about the particular incident I have...

Rónán Mullen: I missed that, but on any given day I possibly am wearing odd socks.
