Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: On that point, I have seen three posters calling for a "No" vote in my area which give no indication of the party or individual making that call. I call on the Deputy Leader of the House to seek clarification from his colleague, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and the Referendum Commission as to whether this is legal.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Let us be fair about this. Senator Norris might be able to assist the House.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: I know the Senator did not climb any poles.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: My point is that those campaigning for a "No" vote might like Senator Norris's assistance in clarifying the position.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Senator O'Toole correctly stated that the aircraft which landed in Athlone was registered in the United States. I understand the Department and its counterpart in the United States are examining this matter to see how the legislation and regulations in this area can be changed. Senator Alex White called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs to respond to the Save the Children allegations...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: I did so reluctantly. This situation is causing great difficulties for the residents of St. Michael's estate and elsewhere. I understand meetings took place yesterday and further meetings will take place on Thursday. The Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Environment, Heritage and Local Government should, as a matter of priority, discuss the outlook for the public private partnership...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Senator Keaveney called for a debate on the marine. I have no difficulty with organising such a debate. Five Departments have responsibility for marine activities and there was good sense in the Senator's suggestion that marine issues be brought together under a single Minister of State. The Senator also suggested that the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform be invited to the...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: The Order of Business is No. 1, Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2006 — Committee Stage. It is proposed that it be taken at the conclusion of the Order of Business.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Senators Twomey, Mary White, Ross and Coghlan expressed serious concerns about the unavailability of broadband throughout the country. I share their concerns in this regard. It is a serious challenge. It is necessary infrastructure which we all would like to see in place more quickly. I intend to allow as much time as Senators require for a wide-ranging debate on broadband. We must go...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: I was just coming to that.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: We will endeavour to have that debate and get the Ministers to the House before the referendum. If that is not possible, I will ask that they send written clarification to the Senator. Senator Hannigan expressed his opinions on the use of languages in the House. It has been very uplifting to hear the Taoiseach, Senators Labhrás Ó Murchú and Joe O'Toole and all the wonderful people who...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: With regard to that language, when a former office holder was in the south of Ireland many years ago, he used such language when speaking about the national question. He may not have used it in the House, but he used it in that context. That is the reason the Nationalist community in the North of Ireland could always rely on Fianna Fáil on the national issue.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Similar language was also used in another private conversation that took place in Dáil Éireann with the former president of the Labour Party. The system that existed at that time still exists. It is in this House also. Even if Senators' microphones are not switched on, that does not mean their conversations are not being heard. At the time, the Ceann Comhairle did not hear the...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: I am just alerting the House to the system that exists. Just because a Member's microphone is not switched on does not mean the conversation is not being heard.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Perhaps even the intimate conversations going on this morning while Senator Paschal Donohoe was speaking were recorded. Who knows. Senator Coffey raised the matter of the serious challenge facing Waterford Crystal. I thank the Senator for his co-operation and understanding yesterday and thank the Cathaoirleach for ensuring the Senator will be able to express his views in an Adjournment...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Resources would include time wasting.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: Senator Quinn was the first person I know of who lived by a planned diary with regard to the time he could spend on various issues and in various places. I have no difficulty with affording time for a debate on the use of resources. With regard to the debate on the Broadcasting Bill which follows the Order of Business, we have been trying for eight to ten years to have an Oireachtas channel...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: The Cathaoirleach will be able to make judgment on issues as they arise on a daily basis, just as he does so well currently.

Seanad: Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse Act 2000: Motion (22 May 2008)

Donie Cassidy: I move: That Seanad Éireann approves the draft Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse Act 2000 (Section 5)(Specified Period) Order 2008 a copy of which was laid before Seanad Éireann on 21 May 2008.

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Order for Second Stage (22 May 2008)
