Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed) (18 Oct 2018)

Eugene Murphy: I invite Deputy Thomas Byrne to introduce his question. I remind Members that they have 30 seconds to put the question. The Minister has two minutes to reply, then there is a supplementary from the Deputy, a reply from the Minister, a final supplementary from the Deputy for one minute and then a final minute for the Minister. I will strictly ensure that those time slots are adhered to in...

Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Second Stage (Resumed) (17 Oct 2018)

Eugene Murphy: Deputy Scanlon has raised a number of the issues I wanted to raise so I will not make a long contribution. Prior to the referendum, I made my view known on a number of points of concern to me but as has been said, the referendum was comprehensively passed by the people and I accept that. However, that was the referendum and this is the legislation. I have some questions regarding a number...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Garda Strength (17 Oct 2018)

Eugene Murphy: I ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the number of gardaí and reservists in each Garda station in counties Roscommon and Galway. All Members acknowledge that the area was very badly hit during the recession. There is a commitment in the programme for Government to increase the number of gardaí to 15,000. I ask for an update on those figures.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Garda Strength (17 Oct 2018)

Eugene Murphy: I thank the Minister for his reply and welcome that the figures are improving. That said, I am very concerned by the low number of Garda reservists. Does the Minister have any explanation for that? We must realise that the role of the Garda Síochána has changed significantly in recent years. As well as serious crime and public order offences, gardaí must deal with...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Garda Strength (17 Oct 2018)

Eugene Murphy: I very much welcome the attempt by the Minister to get gardaí out from behind a desk. They are responsible for an enormous number of duties, as I pointed out to the Minister, in addition to office work. On the demise of the traffic corps, there has been a 27% decrease in its strength in Galway with a fall from 51 officers in 2010 to 37 in 2017. I do not have the figures for 2018....

Eugene Murphy: Like my colleagues, I thank Deputy O'Callaghan for his work in this area. This is a most welcome Bill and I have no doubt it will enhance the respect and protection given to victims of sexual violence in the criminal justice process. I also welcome the statement from the Minister of State, Deputy Stanton, that the Government will not oppose this Bill. This, coupled with the support from...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Eugene Murphy: My question to the Taoiseach is also about broadband. While I accept what he has said about the plan for the future, in my constituency 52% of households are awaiting the roll-out of the national broadband plan. This is affecting business and farmers who have to make applications online. It is a real problem for the Roscommon-Galway constituency. How long will it be before we can expect...
