Mick Barry: I have a final question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Closures: An Post (17 Sep 2019)

Mick Barry: I note the point that there has not been a guarantee that people will even be on the same wages and conditions in a few years' time. I have been asked to ask a question by a group of drivers.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Closures: An Post (17 Sep 2019)

Mick Barry: At the Dublin 15 postal centre in Blanchardstown recently, 40 cycling posts were replaced with 40 diesel vans. I know that part of the reply is that 12 electric bicycles have been introduced there. However, 12 electric bicycles do not replace 40 cycling posts, particularly when 40 diesel vans have been brought into the equation there. I ask the witnesses to comment on that.

Public Service Pay Commission Report on the Permanent Defence Force: Statements (Resumed) (11 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: I begin by quoting from a post to the Facebook page of the Wives and Partners of the Defence Forces, WPDF, last week:Today was a new low. I had to put water in the milk to have enough for the children. We dont even have enough for breakfast for all. I am on leave but I am gonna go into the barracks, throw on a uniform and sneak in the cookhouse to grab some free lunch and hopefully I'll...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (11 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: I also wish every person who works in this place, all the staff, the best possible summer holiday. Last Thursday the Dáil voted by 73 votes to 39 for a motion opposing closure of the Cork mail centre and in support of saving the 240 jobs there. The overwhelming vote was supported by Deputies of 11 different parties or groups and was opposed by members of two. The motion called on...

Brexit Contingency Action Plan: Statements (11 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: When a country is the victim of a big external shock, it needs to respond and there are always choices in how it might respond. During the Second World War, for example, many countries, even those within the framework of capitalism, decided that a high degree of nationalisation, coupled with increased welfare provisions for the population, was the best way to deal with the crisis. In...

Written Answers — Department of Public Expenditure and Reform: Office of Public Works Projects (11 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: 248. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 167 of 5 March 2019, when the Chief State Solicitors Office and the OPW will meet with the parties affected by the manner in which the site was assembled especially in circumstances in which new facts have come to light which will assist the investigation and resolution of the matters. [31175/19]

EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement: Motion [Private Members] (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: I raise the issue of the Mercosur trade agreement in respect of climate change. The United Nations has told us there are 11 years in which to prevent irreversible damage to the planet from climate change. The trade agreement seriously undermines attempts to do that. The world number one carbon sink, the Amazon rainforest, is under threat from deforestation. Some 800 sq. km of rainforest...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: I want to make a couple of points about decongregation, but before I do, I want to register my strong opinion that we need to move as quickly as possible on the Part M issue, from new builds ticking the boxes on visitation to new builds being good for people with disabilities to live in. This needs to happen as quickly as possible. With regard to decongregation, from what is being said,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: Was a target set in 2009 or around that time to achieve complete decongregation by 2019?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: I strongly agree that decongregation needs to be appropriate and correct and proper supports need to be put in place. I am sure the witnesses will agree with me that such points should not be excuses for implementing the policy of decongregation more slowly than it might otherwise be implemented. There is no one going into congregated settings this year. According to the report, the number...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: I hear what Dr. MacLellan is saying about people doing this at a pace they are comfortable with. Is the major stumbling block preventing this from being done more quickly the concern of those involved about making the change, or is the delay in getting this done relates more to the ability of the State to provide the housing facilities and wraparound services she has mentioned?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: Is it 50:50?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: I hear what Dr. MacLellan is saying about a combination of the two approaches. If this committee is to accept that point, and I take it that she is an expert in this area, the failure of the State to provide the housing facilities and wraparound services is an important factor and part of the reason that decongregation will seemingly be with us right through the 2020s. We are going to need...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Mick Barry: No one is arguing for anyone to be forced into a solution.
