Martin Conway: I join other Senators in wishing everybody who is associated with us, who works on our behalf or who assists or supports us all the very best for Christmas. We should reach our hearts out to those who will be having a difficult Christmas for any reason. Christmas can be a very difficult time for people who are under pressure. I wish everyone safety and as much happiness as they can...

Martin Conway: Hopefully, we will make some progress in completing Committee Stage of the Judicial Appointments Bill. I commend the Minister on a comprehensive speech and I am delighted that this last legislative requirement, which is quite technical but far more serious than that, will enable us to ratify the Istanbul Convention. I am delighted we will facilitate its passage through this House and,...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Business of Joint Committee
Role and Remuneration of Elected Local Authority Members: Discussion (5 Dec 2018) Martin Conway: I wish to make just a couple of quick points before I go to the Seanad to vote. This boils down to pounds, shillings and pence. The way one respects people is by paying them well. The old quintessential saying in my part of the world is, "You pay peanuts, you end up getting monkeys." This is what will happen eventually if we do not deal with this problem. While I have the utmost respect...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund: Motion (5 Dec 2018)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State. He may recall that when he was Chairman of this committee, we visited Portugal to see how it dealt with reception centres. Back then in 2013 or 2014, direct provision in this country was different from today. Today some of our reception centres compare favourably with what we witnessed in Portugal. Engagement with NGOs has borne fruit. There is probably...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund: Motion (5 Dec 2018)
Martin Conway: People will come to our country seeking international protection because our economy is improving and we are rightly seen as a nation that cares. Should the State be running these reception centres directly as opposed to contracting private companies? While it might be something for the longer term, should the State build purpose-built reception centres and run them or at least own them or...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund: Motion (5 Dec 2018)
Martin Conway: The situation is improving; it is never ideal. I welcome the insistence on the availability of self-catering. That type of autonomy for people in centres is important for their mental well-being as well as everything else. I thank the Minister of State and hope he can keep up the good work. He might give us a further update in the new year.
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects Status (28 Nov 2018)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Jim Daly, to the House. I raise a very important issue relating to education in Ennistymon, County Clare. The debate on a community school for the area has been ongoing since I was in school there in the late 1980s and early 1990s. There are three schools in Ennistymon, namely, the CBS, the vocational school and Scoil Mhuire, all of which do an...

Martin Conway: The pre-tendering process is taking place as we speak or is about to take place and will take eight to 12 weeks. When that is completed, the tendering process and identification of a suitable contractor will take seven to eight months. Is it reasonable to expect that construction will begin on the site in 2019 and the first enrolment of students will be in September 2021?
