Seanad: Education (Welfare) (Amendment) Bill 2017: Second Stage (6 Feb 2018)

Paul Gavan: On behalf of Sinn Féin I welcome the Bill to the House and again compliment our colleague, Senator Ó Ríordáin. It is a good Bill. I agree with Senator Gallagher. I was surprised to find this was not already covered by legislation. The Bill addresses an important gap which needs to be bridged. It addresses an issue which is of serious concern, as Senator Byrne alluded...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Paul Gavan: I will briefly refer to the latest disaster in the roll out of broadband as a result of Eir's withdrawal. It is a disaster but Sinn Féin has been consistent; we warned that the process was flawed from the beginning.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Paul Gavan: I am not delighted. It is a disaster for people in rural Ireland. It is a disaster that stems ultimately from an ideological fixation that Fine Gael has with tendering out and privatisation. That is where the flaws are. It is like listening to bald men arguing over a comb when one hears Fianna Fáil - I can say this - raising the issue.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Paul Gavan: Let us remember it was Fianna Fáil that started this disaster-----

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Paul Gavan: -----by privatising Eircom in 1999. It is pretty cheeky now to say things are not working out because it started this process. Unfortunately Fine Gael continued it. It has been a disaster. People in rural Ireland are at a complete loss with regard to this issue. That is the point. The privatisation model has failed. We want a debate on the matter but we need the Leader's Government to...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Paul Gavan: They are going on strike.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Feb 2018)

Paul Gavan: What about the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform?

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: I wish to refer to an organisation called the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland. I heard a representative of this organisation on "Morning Ireland" on Monday railing once again against the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill. By coincidence, as I was coming into the Chamber today, I saw its representatives busy lobbying. Perhaps I am showing my own naivety but I am surprised by the amount of...

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: What shocked me about the contribution on "Morning Ireland", and perhaps I should not be shocked, was that the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland was railing against the proposals to label alcohol as a cancer-causing product. I drink, so I am not coming here with a holier-than-thou attitude. The facts of the matter are that alcohol causes mouth, throat, voice box, oesophagus, breast,...

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: I want to put on the record my own absolute disgust at the activities of big alcohol and the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland. They are not even pretending to care about people's health. All they care about is their profits and the costs to their producers. The cost to the health of the people of our country clearly does not register at all. I call for that debate.

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: They are in here every day.

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: We do not use it to court big business.

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (31 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: The Minister of State is very welcome. I thank her for coming to the House. Sinn Féin has supported and will continue to support the Bill. Merging institutes of technology has the potential to enhance regional development and build stronger and more dynamic academic institutions. I pay tribute to the staff and students of the institutes of technology who have borne the brunt in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. How many branches has each of the pillar banks closed in the last decade?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: Is Mr. Lauhoff saying that Bank of Ireland has closed fewer than ten branches?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: I have a follow up question or two. I do not wish to pick on Ms Moloney; it just happens that these are the statistics. I ask her not to take this personally. I see in the statement that Ms Moloney says business lending and business generally is largely relationship driven. That is not my experience from talking to people in small businesses. In my experience, the banks have withdrawn...
