Topical Issue Debate: (4 Oct 2012)

John Deasy: Sunday, 7 October will mark one year since 525 people lost their jobs in Waterford with the closure of TalkTalk. At that time, the Minister said Waterford was being treated as a special case by development agencies and that this point needed to be reflected elsewhere across...

Public Accounts Committee: Special Report No. 78 of the Comptroller and Auditor General: Matters Arising out of Education Audits (27 Sep 2012)

John Deasy: I want to make a comment, which is not directed at anyone here. We are all busy people but what we are hearing is extraordinary. It is extraordinary that anyone who is contracted by the Department of Education and Skills would put himself or herself into that position. We are all busy and often in a rush to get somewhere and I just do not understand this at all.

Public Accounts Committee: Special Report No. 78 of the Comptroller and Auditor General: Matters Arising out of Education Audits (27 Sep 2012)

John Deasy: It was one way. I thank both Mr. McFeely and Dr. Neavyn. To change the subject, a report commissioned by the Higher Education Authority has featured prominently in the media in recent days. While I have not read it, I have read some of the media coverage of the reaction to its findings. In politics, it is said one should not ask a question if one does not know the answer to it. One...

Public Accounts Committee: Special Report No. 78 of the Comptroller and Auditor General: Matters Arising out of Education Audits (27 Sep 2012)

John Deasy: To play devil's advocate, we all read newspaper reports on the dearth of graduates in information technology. This lack of graduates is becoming a problem with technology firms considering Ireland as a place in which to invest and establish operations. The report by the international panel is a radical departure, especially the proposal to merge UCD and Trinity College. Do we need...

Public Accounts Committee: Special Report No. 78 of the Comptroller and Auditor General: Matters Arising out of Education Audits (27 Sep 2012)

John Deasy: I have spoken to Dr. Neavyn about the collaboration between RTE and the institutes of technology. Will he outline how this partnership will take shape in the case of Waterford Institute of Technology? Very little detail has emerged on the physical shape of this collaboration and the courses the institutes propose to build around the presence of the national broadcaster. What discussions...

Public Accounts Committee: Special Report No. 78 of the Comptroller and Auditor General: Matters Arising out of Education Audits (27 Sep 2012)

John Deasy: It is fair to say that the committee has a clear picture of what happened in Waterford Institute of Technology over the past 12 years or so. It is a pretty disturbing picture. It is valuable that Mr. McFeely is here to explain what occurred. I need to go back on this. Maybe I am flogging a dead horse or going back over old ground in taking up the issue that has been raised by the Chairman...
