Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forestry Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (6 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: I wish to follow on from Deputy Barry's point. The most common call I receive on this issue is from school bus services that use small, rural back roads. As the hedges are overgrown, some services refuse to take those roads to pick up children. Everyone's hands seem to be tied.

Other Questions: Commemorative Events (6 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: 13. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht his plans to commemorate the exploits of Ernest Shackleton in view of the fact that 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Endurance Expedition in 1914; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10728/14]

Other Questions: Commemorative Events (6 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: In light of its being the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Endurance expedition by Ernest Shackleton in 1914, I would like the Minister to outline his and his officials' plans to mark this very significant event. From his recent visit to Athy, the Minister will know about the close link between Ernest Shackleton and south Kildare. There is great interest in the region in determining...

Other Questions: Commemorative Events (6 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: I thank the Minister for the response. I wish to refer to a number of points and the tying in of the event to a First World War commemoration. The tale of the Endurance and of Shackleton's expedition is one of survival against the destruction of war. The Minister mentioned some proposed projects. It is proposed to have a concert in the National Concert Hall in early October. It would be...

Other Questions: Waterways Ireland Remit (6 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: 10. [10727/14]

Order of Business (5 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: In light of the comments by some farming organisation representatives yesterday in the Joint Oireachtas committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine on the bull beef crisis that there is market manipulation by processors and retailers, and also mindful of a potential price war on milk that seems to be breaking out in the United Kingdom where Tesco is selling four pints of milk for £1, I...

Order of Business (5 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: The consumer protection and competition Bill; I acknowledge the Taoiseach's response earlier to Deputy Ryan.

Order of Business (5 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: My second point, if Deputies Ó Fearghaíl and Dooley do not mind me asking questions and acknowledging the mandate that I have to be here, relates to the gambling control Bill. Following publication of the Betting (Amendment) Bill 2013, the gambling control Bill is to update and consolidate law on betting and gambling and the Taoiseach might outline when that is due.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Bull Beef Sector: Discussion (4 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. I wish to tease out a little more the change of specifications and the moving of the goalposts. When exactly did the meat industry start communicating to farmers their limited options for beef over 16 months? The IFA said in its presentation that in 2011 the factories strongly encouraged farmers not to export their dairy calves and keep them...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Bull Beef Sector: Discussion (4 Mar 2014)

Martin Heydon: I thank the delegations for their detailed presentations. I will not rehash what has been said because we have a lot to get through. I will just make a few points and put my question. I concur with everything Deputy Deering has said and agree we need both a short-term and long-term solution. The consumer protection and competition Bill will be a key component for that solution, as will be...

Post Office Network: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (26 Feb 2014)

Martin Heydon: I am delighted to have an opportunity to speak on this important motion. When postmasters in my local area started to contact me to raise concerns about this matter, I thought I had missed something like an announcement of post office closures. I am conscious of the absolute devastation that would be caused in villages like Narraghmore and Ballitore in my close-knit community of south...
