Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Facilities and Costs: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Aug 2018)

Lynn Ruane: It is where people get loans. It is not illegal or anything like that. It is €35 to €40 for every €100. I have spoken to people in my community and my friends about this. One parent said they had to borrow €1,100 from a loan shark almost every year around August. They would repay approximately €1,430 over a 26-week period. This is somebody who is on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Facilities and Costs: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Aug 2018)

Lynn Ruane: With no disrespect to Mr. Mulconry, all I heard from him was about teachers who are doing their job. I expect nothing less from my children's teachers than that they would have a passion to improve the writing and reading of their pupils. Is that not what they are taught to do? Is that not the vocation they chose? Of course, good teachers exist and I acknowledge their passion for the job,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Facilities and Costs: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Aug 2018)

Lynn Ruane: That is important.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Facilities and Costs: Discussion (29 Aug 2018)

Lynn Ruane: There were detailed opening statements, but the issues least discussed were green spaces and PE halls. At a time when we are constantly discussing mental health, childhood obesity and other things, will any witnesses comment on the impact of not putting in place spaces for children? Obesity affects poorer communities more than those living in affluent areas due to the type of food choices...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Facilities and Costs: Discussion (29 Aug 2018)

Lynn Ruane: The maintenance of the green spaces ties into what Mr. Irwin pointed out in terms of maintenance being still restricted to one caretaker within schools as the embargo has not been lifted. Perhaps rather than not considering green spaces because they cannot be maintained we should consider increasing the level of maintenance support within a school to ensure the green spaces are maintained.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Facilities and Costs: Discussion (29 Aug 2018)

Lynn Ruane: I will ask a couple of brief questions to help my understanding of the issue. I have heard a great deal both in the Seanad and in emails I have received about administrative days and release days. I am a little unclear about the reasons principals are campaigning for such measures, rather than calling for an end to the practice of requiring principals to teach in the first place. Is it the...

Lynn Ruane: I wish to share time with Senator Alice-Mary Higgins.

Seanad: Traveller Culture and History in Education Bill 2018: Second Stage (Resumed) (11 Jul 2018)

Lynn Ruane: I thank Senator Kelleher for allowing me to be a part of this important legislation and I commend the Traveller community and the Irish Traveller movement for their work and activism in this area. I am honoured to support this legislation and I am encouraged by the broad support for it in the House. After hours of thinking about what I wanted to say and how to phrase how important I think...

Seanad: Situation in Palestine: Statements (11 Jul 2018)

Lynn Ruane: We will not have the opportunity to contribute if speakers do not adhere to the speaking times agreed on the Order of Business.

Seanad: Situation in Palestine: Statements (Resumed) (11 Jul 2018)

Lynn Ruane: As my time is brief, I will get straight to the point. In terms of the subject matter we are debating here, we should point out that we actually have a remarkable level of consensus in this Chamber. There is a broad consensus that the Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal. In the words of the Tánaiste, Deputy Coveney, from our January debate: “The relentless...

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Jul 2018)

Lynn Ruane: On a point of order, we have been talking for a long time but it has not been on what is proposed in amendment No. 29. I have sat outside the Chamber and tried to ignore that, but many of us have tabled amendments and want to be constructive regarding the Bill. I support the amendment proposed by Senator McDowell, but I have nearly been talked into not supporting it at this stage as the...

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Jul 2018)

Lynn Ruane: It is not.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Jul 2018)

Lynn Ruane: It is not confusing. If the Senators read the amendments, they will see that these are related. If we separated them, it would take us much longer to discuss them. We would only be repeating ourselves on each amendment for the rest of the night. They are related. If I am correct, some would actually fall if a Sinn Féin amendment passed. I do not see why they should be separated...
