- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Northern Ireland (17 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister of State for her response. I also thank the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Minister, as well as previous Ministers, for being generous with funding and the time allocated to the issue of integrated education, as well as many other cross-Border and peace initiatives across the island but particularly in Northern Ireland. I also pay tribute to the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: Three years ago at one of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly meetings, I met a professor of European history who forecast exactly what would happen after so many years of difficulty in Europe. He forecast that the United Kingdom and United States would opt for far-right leaders. He said that after times of difficulty, people look for a strong leader. I asked him what he meant and he...
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I was not here yesterday, but I am delighted that Ireland has applied to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023. I am amazed and amused at everybody falling over himself or herself to complain that matches would not be played in Nowlan Park, Thurles or wherever else. It is not long since the GAA had Rule 27 which was passed in 1922. It stated: "Any member of the Association who plays or...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Chairman for that compliment. I am looking forward to it. That compliment was a gift from him. I left Boyle, which is in the north west, at 5.30 this morning. If I drive from Galway, Belfast or from any other part of the island, there is access to a motorway or a dual carriageway. In the case of the N4, N5, N3 and N2 there is no motorway extending beyond Mullingar or...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: Will that be included in the mid-term review?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: Thank you.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Tourism and Competitiveness Strategy: Discussion (9 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I will try to be brief. Most of the questions have been asked by other speakers. I congratulate the witnesses. It is not too often that people come into these committee rooms with a good story to tell. The industry came from a difficult situation where it faced huge challenges five or six years ago with the downturn in the economy. The 9% VAT rate has certainly been a help, but most of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I remind people that Friday is 11 November - Armistice Day - the date on which the millions of men who fell in the Great War and many other wars are remembered. I wear my Irish shamrock poppy pin today to remember the 50,000 Irishmen - Nationalist and Unionist from north and south - who fought in the armies of the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. For some reason, we forget...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I ask members to support these men who were forgotten. When I recall what happened in the 1930s, I think of what has happened in the past few weeks and months with our near neighbours on the other island exiting the EU and now the United States has elected Donald Trump. They effectively want to retreat within their borders and build a wall. That wall should not be about a wall of minds....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Maghaberry Prison: Discussion (3 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I thank the witnesses for appearing before the committee today. The report or agreement is perfectly measured, patient and forensic. I cannot understand why the recommendations have not been implemented since 2010. The committee should agree to the call for this agreement to be implemented as soon as possible. Prisons are not particularly nice places. Prison is where prisoners are...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: I join my colleague, Senator Craughwell, in acknowledging and recognising the bravery and service of the men who fought in the siege of Jadotville. I worked on behalf of one of those men over the summer and I do not know if it came out of my work but I was delighted about the ceremony to commemorate those men on 17 September in Custume Barracks, which I attended. There was an issue...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: Unfortunately, people die and people are not familiar with the cost of a burial plot or the formalities involved. I and many Members deal with these issues for people. The Department responsible, the Department of Social Protection, should be contacted and asked what exactly it is doing to highlight this sensitive issue. That could help people to be aware of the assistance that is...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Palliative Care Services (25 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: The palliative care centre is one of three major capital projects being developed at Roscommon County Hospital. I am pleased to report that the €6 million endoscopy project was officially opened recently by the Minister for Health, Deputy Simon Harris. I am also pleased to report that the Minister, Deputy Harris, has given the green light to an €8 million medical...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Palliative Care Services (25 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: I am delighted to be the politician who set up the meeting between the Minister and the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. Unfortunately, I could not attend as I was getting an ECG in hospital and did not realise how long it would take. I went in at 3 p.m. and left at 9 p.m. I pay tribute to the competency of the staff and surgeons at the Mater Hospital. I saw at first hand the difficult...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: I raise the matter of the relocation of the Seanad again, given the concerns expressed yesterday in the national media by academics about the planned use of the National Museum of Ireland and the associated costs. We must ask the question again. Why can we not look to the regions for an alternative site or at least explore that option? This move will continue to be highlighted in the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: It will be dealt with.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: I read this in the national newspapers-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: That is good. It is nice to see that it has been dealt with.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: I understand that I have the floor. I compliment the Ulster GAA county board - and everyone else involved - on the work relating to the Casement Park project in west Belfast. This is very good news. Having such a wonderful venue will undoubtedly be a huge boost to Ulster GAA and GAA followers. I wish Ulster GAA the very best and look forward to the stadium being completed by 2019.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Implications for Good Friday Agreement of UK EU Referendum Result: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Oct 2016)
Frank Feighan: The witnesses are welcome to this debate on the serious situation in which we find ourselves. The Irish Government and most people in the Republic were very concerned about the result of the referendum as they wanted Britain to remain in the EU. It has happened now, and Britain will leave. The Prime Minister has said that Brexit means Brexit, but what exactly does Brexit mean? I do not...
